Nihon Ken Spam![ book scans ]

For once, I get to post pictures of some dogs Though unfortunately, none of these are my own. I've owned this book for a year, I originally bought for the amazing photos on all the different dog breeds to use as references for drawings. Anyway, I discovered a couple of months ago that all six Nihon Ken are in this book. I believe it's because the book was originally Japanese [ the author was even born in Tokyo in 1933! ] Anyways, I scanned all the pages on the Six Nihon Ken as well as the American Akita / Great Japanese Dog.


It really is an excellent book, & what's even better is it's only $8! I have two copies

Sorry about the poor-quality, my scanner is 5 years old, so forgive him. These files are large. 1000px across. Thought you guys who haven't seen these already might find it interesting as the rarer breeds are rarely mentioned in books [ even rarer with pictures ]

Really Melissa? I was thinking the opposite, how easier it is to tell the difference between all of them when you have a side by side comparison.

I didn't read it all, just skimmed... It sounded relatively accurate - the Great Japanese Dog one is kinda vague.

I think comparative to other dog types, all the Japanese spitz look very similar save for size and some markings.
That Hokkaido looks just like Sarako (?)'s!

Oh yea I definitely get the sense of them all being closely related with the curly tails and pointed ears/faces, but there are certainly some very obvious differences in appearance.

I only read the Shikoku one - as that is what I know -- but there are inaccuracies. Shikoku do not come in brindle and they say that they do; they have no mention of white, which occurs but shouldn't be bred, same with black and tan. The weight I think is a bit too high as well.

Sorry to hijack, heres some of the pages from my Encyclopedia of the Dog by Dr. Bruce Fogle. Some of the information seems right, but theres over 400 breeds in the book, and the descriptions are vague.

But, I did just snag a photographic book of the Japanese breeds off ebay with 111 pages, so i'm hoping this will make me happy. Straight from Japan!

I agree with everyone, look at all the images side-by-side I see a lot of differences...but I also see a lot of the similarities.

Steph - Thanks for sharing! I have a similar book [ "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" ] Only it doesn't have Nihon Ken, save for the Akita & Shiba. ~

i just get "Legacy of the Dog" . i was expecting more info about Kais 8/ but anyways theres a lot info of different rare breeds and the pictures are just amazing
