extended teething

edited August 2008 in General
ok so i've been away for a while cause I forogot the site -_- but my shiba roxy started teething about 2 months ago.....when we moved, and we can't figure out if its just regular teething or if its her teething because of stress from the move, at our old house we had a fence that she could go out in the back yard and run around at our new house we don't have one and she has had to stay in or be on a tiedown leash in teh backyard, I saw that most shibas teeth for like 3 weeks, she is still teething/chewing on everything and its getting bad cause its a new house and she chewed up the window molding....my parents are getting fustrated and she may be up for adoption if she doesn't stop : ( I don't want her to but my dad can't stand her chewing on everything. any advice? she'll be a year old in september.

From what I know, & I am very far from being an expert, dogs chew most out of too much pent-up energy & boredom. Are you playing with her just the same? Does she have something to keep herself occupied? You said she use to run around in the backyard, & she can't do that any more, so have you been walking her more to compensate?

I know it's been said a million times but a tired dog is a happy dog ;D~ [ happy = less destructive ]~

well I'm not at home I'm in virgina working so right now I know she's prob not getting the work out she needs, I try to play with her as much as I can also she sleeps under or on different beds but doesn't chew on them which is good, she has been seeing like other dogs walking and she'lll go to the window and whine then thats when she's chewed on the window, do you think she mabe needs to play with some other dogs? she does typically good with other dogs she's a lil bit of an aggressive player and in play bitting and some dogs/dog owners take that as aggressive and try to attack her but my aunts goldens do great with her....are there any people from charrollette area NC that know of some good dog parks mabe?

Some Shibas are chewers however, dogs are very much creatures of habit and from what you briefly describe it sounds like your pooch is stressed, frustrated, or quite possibly developing some separation anxiety.

Moving to a new home is a big change for dogs. There are new scents and things are very much in an upheaval, out of place, and routines disrupted. It is a time when many Shibas tend to get lost/run off in confusion, defecate in the house, or chew excessively out of stress.

How much exercise is he/she getting? Since you no longer have a yard it is doubly important that he/she is given ample extensive exercise several times a day. Maybe a doggie day care could help your shiba while you are out about working etc.

Does he/she have full access to his toys and chews and a comfortable place that he would normally rest such as a crate or pen that is familiar and safe when your family can not attend to him? An x-pen might be a good idea.

Consulting with a trainer and behaviorist who can come in is probably the good idea so you can get to get an idea about play with other dogs and stress situation. It is really difficult to say for sure about what is happening since we are not there to observe first hand exactly what is occurring.

she has a crate and accsess to her toys we put. her in her crate when we go out. it's the same crate and bed we had at the old house we try and exersise her when we can and if we don't watch her shell go and sleep under my parents bed or our guest bed insted of her crate she has a 10' or so leash so she can go out on our deck and backyard she hasn't run away well she has but she's always come back. oh she has been chewing on her collars until they break Is this a sign of stress ?

When you say "try to exercise" her, what does that mean? If it means play with her (like toss a ball in the yard) that is not enough. IIRC you said she's about a year old right? Brandon once said (and I happen to agree with him) that a Shiba of that age should be getting AT LEAST 90 minutes of structured exercise every day. This means walking her on a short leash at a brisk pace. I do that religiously with my dogs even if it means getting up at 5:00 am to squeeze in an hour long walk before an early meeting and neither of my dogs have ever had destructive behaviors.

no I mean taking her on an hour walk but some times we get busy and don't get a chance to walk her

well based on this, I'd say between stress and her possible allergy, her chewing habit is most likely frustration. Once you really get a real exercise plan going for her, her destructive behaviors will probably lesson.
