shiba and moving

ok so we recently moved, roxy was completely house broken and since we moved she's basically reverted to a state were she isn't house broke at the new house, what I was wonder is what should we do about this, she has been using the basment as a bathroom and she's upstairs broke atleast, we just want to get her to go outside, we have a 25ft cable so she can go outside in the back yard, we are going to get a fence soon, about 2-3 weeks, we took her over to the old house and she pee'd and poo'd like she used to in the back yard but we can't get her to go outside at the new house, do you sugest retraining her with puppy pads?

    The exercise pen was a lifesaver for me... well worth the money. And since we don't/can't have a fence (stupid city rules) we're going to get another one or two to hook up for a bigger outdoor play area. Constant supervision is a must (obviously) so it's easy to reward them for doing what you want them to do.

    I can't say this is your solution, but after pulling my hair out with a similar problem, this is what worked for me.

    well we did have one then my aunt needed it for her goldens, then she gave it away, but she said she'd buy us a new one so we should be getting it soon.

    it seems as though dogs designate where they spend all or a vast majority of their time as their home, so if they are not used to being at a new place/home/etc. they are just using the potty as they would outdoors or on a walk. You will have to re-train her to be housebroken so she realizes this new house is her home now.

    Did you maintain any kind of pottying schedule at your other home? Sticking to that will help her realize the routine and she'll probably get it in a few days.

    well we couldn't due to the lack of a way to let her outside we just got this cable like a week ago. and her old scedule was when she woke up she was put outside then allowed in after potty then went out after naps feedings or if she scratched to go out

    Do you take her on walks? If so, does she go to the bathroom when on the walks?

    When we moved it didnt even occur to us that we had to retrain Niko, and when we got Sasha (rescue and was house broken) we had to retrain her. Sasha took a very long time, about 6 months. But Niko was very easy. Start back where you started. Get on a schedule, be consistent and resist variations and changes. I never did the puppy pads, but if they worked before then I would try it again. Start from square 1 and work up. It may not take as long. Keep a designated, door, potty spot and words/phrases. Changes throw dogs off. When we tell the dogs lets go night night, they go to the door to go potty, even if they just came in. I will let them out just to keep the routine.

    well she'll pee outside just not poop. or well thats what we think cause we've not found any wetspots anywere in the house.

    Have you cleaned all her area's throughly with something like natures miracle?

    It might help to get that scent cleared out to try and start fresh (no pun intended). Did the precious owners have pets?

    yes we had a cat, we've had her since 8 wks we recently moved to our new house.

    And by "precious", Rachael means "previous".

    The reason you clean with an enzymatic cleaner like Natures Miracle is to ensure that any trace of scent is removed. Dogs tend to go where they have gone before. They are inherently clean animals and prefer not to soil where they live; however, if where they live has the scent of a previous potty event, they will assume it is acceptable to go there. Using a standard cleaner will not erase the scent the way a purpose designed enzymatic cleaner will.

    Yes it could. She will learn that it is hers and that is the proper place for it to go. Lots of praise and if she is food motivated treat her up initially. When she smells her packages outside praise her so she knows it being outside is positive!!
