Weight

edited August 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
I was just reading another forum where people posted their Shiba's weight at different stages of life and it got me to wondering...

Is there any sort of weight/age chart for Shibas? I only starting wondering after seeing that most of the posts listed around 9-10lbs for their 3 month old Shiba, and Keiko is only at 6.8lbs at 13 weeks.

Just curious, not really too concerned :o)

Nola is a tad over 7 pounds at 13 weeks. I think Bella was closer to 9 pounds at 13 weeks. And I think 6 of those pounds were all legs!

Joey was 8 pounds at 9 weeks. He put on weight really really fast (like a pound a week) until he was bout 5 months. Now its more like .5 per week. He is 25 pounds at 7 months.

... Toby was around 10-12 pounds at about 12 weeks. I'm pretty sure he was 8 lbs at 6 or 7 weeks of age. He now weights 30 lbs, and is 8 months old.

Just keep in mind, Toby was from a very small litter, and was a very fat puppy. :)

I'm sure it varies greatly with each shiba. As long as she looks healthy, nothing to be concerned about :) [ also, female shiba weigh slightly less than male shiba, if I remember correctly. ] ~

I think someone has been slipping Toby MiracleGro. He is one huge shiba. Moto is 2 years old and 25lbs.

Tojo is 2.5 years and 22 lbs.

Toby is a big boy, sounds like he could end up at a solid 35lbs+ as he fills out.

Standard is 17lbs for females and 20lbs for males, right?

According to the AKC...Average weight at preferred size is approximately 23 pounds for males, 17 pounds for females.

wasn't someone saying something on some thread (i love being specific!) about the two types of shiba according to where their bloodlines originated? One is smaller and regal looking, one larger and sturdy looking?
  • edited November -1
The larger, sturdier one, I think it starts a "J" or an "M" (the term before Shiba to notate the difference), shouldn't have anything to do with the bloodlines of Shibas in America (I don't think). I believe they are pretty rare.

Jen - they did, I don't remember what thread, either. I remember think that Jazz must be in that smaller group.

    Found: http://www.shiba-dog.de/ShibaDog-en.htm
Shibas are of 4 original varieties: Shinshu, San'in, Mino and Akita Shiba (Jomon Shiba)

I guess it would be a rarity to find instances of these types in american bloodlines, but probably makes sense as to why some shibas are larger or smaller or have different coats. Of course it comes down to genetics in breeding, but thats the basis, not the whole story.
even in my pack, all 3 look relatively different. Hachi is smaller built but very regal looking with longer, fuller hair and a shorter tail. Tsuki has sleek hair and is pretty leggy for a girl shiba and a double curled regular tail. Kitsu has a different muzzle than the girls, longer almost, and his coat is between the sleek and the puff and has a big puffy wonderful tail.

    its interesting, anyway.

Sol has a double curled tail as well, for a shiba he is a heavy one, 31lbs, our vet looked him over and said he just a solid dog, not overweight by any means. Luna is also a tad heavy for a female breed, 21lbs, I guess they come from good stock . Sol is almost 16" at the withers and luna is 13.5". They both came from purebreads....(Sol's dad is called "bear" becasue he was large).

I wonder how much Toby weighs now. :) haha.

He'll be 9 months old on the 24th. I'm making a guess that Toby will probably weigh 35+ lbs once he's filled in. Hes got a few more months left!

I am telling you...Toby is a shikoku impersonating a shiba.

A Jomon Shiba breeder went bankrupt recently, a dog rescue I help out at on occasion is rehoming the dogs. I have a few pics of them, you can really see the difference in the face.

I think the Jomon's look more primitive.

Thanks for the pictures Shigeru! It's really sad to hear about that breeder. ~

wow - awesome pics! I hope they all go to good homes, they don't look very happy in those pics. :o(

Osy - I think that's the idea of a Jomon Shiba, they are supposed to mirror the "look" of the original indigenous Nihonken.

My shibas are backwards on the size chart. My boy is very petite with little feet and has a drastically smaller build than my girl (who isn't even full grown!) who is taller and longer and has a lot more weight on her. The girl is actually normal sized, but she looks huge and heavy compared to the tiny little squirt that Yogi ended up being. The weirdest part is that they have the same sire, so we are thinking the boy must have been the runt of his litter.

There's 6 dogs ranging from 1-9 years old, they've been kenneled their entire lives (not even walks), so they have no training/social skills. Funny thing is none of them show any fear/aggression and hardly bark at all, they just love attention though.

You can see the lack of leg muscle on this female.

wow - that's so sad! That dog looks miserable. :o(

That's the thing about dogs, they have unconditional love. [some] Humans can treat them so bad yet they are still willing to give their love again and again - and then the dogs that refuse too give their love after being abused are called "aggressive" and culled. So sad that some people feel the need to take advantage of them - for money none the less.

I'm glad to hear those dogs will be going to a better place. The resiliance that dogs have is just awe inspiring.

You can check out more info about the Jomon dog here:
    http://www.shiba-dog.de/ShibaDog-en.htm
Jomon shibas (akita shibas) are an attempt to recreate an older, primitive type of Japanese dog (Jomon dog) through selective breeding, rare, with the most observable difference in the angle of the stop and profile. They are not the standard shiba as the Jomon shiba breeders feel they are too cute and don't select for it. I believe the Shin Shu line of shiba (the combination of) is more prevelant in the US. Also, as shibas and the larger white kishu appear very similar, I believe the two have been historically crossed resulting in some larger shibas and the prevelance of cream shibas.
