Met with Corina and Kei tonight!

edited August 2008 in General
Corina and I scheduled a little play date at the local dog park with Kei and Portia. This was Kei's first time at a dog park and Portia's first time in the "big dog" area. Everything went well. Kei is so cute and sweet! Very social with people and dogs. He kept licking Portia's ears...literally drenched them...it was cute. And man...he has grown! He is taller and bigger than Portia now! He is such a handsome stud!

Well we encountered 3 dogs who weren't so friendly with Kei. First was an older Husky - he kept approaching and growling, so the owner took him on lead and left the park. The second was a basenji, the owner took him as well. The third was right before we were going to leave. A Shiba Mix female really wanted to play with Kei. Kei was on lead already. Then this big American Bulldog came up and started growling, so the owner re-directed him away. The Shiba Mix kept trying to play and the American Bulldog came again, this time just sniffing, then Kei started to follow and before you know it *BAM* fight. Corina stepped in right away - before I could even process. She was in between the dogs and the American Bulldog bit her leg. She was punctured - and the lady took her dog away. Kei seemed fine, he didn't seem traumatized by it at all, he wasn't bit or hurt either. We think its because he was claiming the Shiba Mix Female..but who knows..

After that we left the park. So we had a good 2 1/2 hours there and Kei seemed to be having a blast. Portia on the other hand was pretty anti-social. She didn't play with any of the dogs and just followed me around. I think she was intimidated by the bigger dogs. In the small dog park she is running around everywhere getting love from other people and playing with all the other dogs. But it has been a few months since the last time I took her to the dog park.

Oh and Corina is fine. She broke her glasses :( - but she is OK! She says HI! And she will probably have internet sometime next month...so she sould be back on here shortly!

And now for the pics! (it was REALLY HARD to get good pics - so bare with me!)

Kei playing with 2 dogs...and Portia watching baseline.

OMG! People are so Stupid! Shouldn't Corina go to the hospital & get a rabies vaccine?! I mean, you never know!

Glad to hear the pups had fun at least, Kei & Portia are adorable together <3~

"Your Dog", newsletter from Cummings Vet.School at Tufts University, has a good article written by the editor telling why dog parks are dangerous and why she won't take her dog. It is in the September issue.

    Nice pictures, Romi

Glad to hear from Corina and Kei. It's cool that you guys met.
    Nice photos!

It's a pity the outcome of that Bulldog encounter, I hope Corina is fine cause that bled a lot, it seems.

Sounds like a great night....until the bite. Looks pretty bad.

Seriously. I hope she got that treated. No dog bite should be taken lightly.

On the bright side, it looks like they had a blast! Poor Portia probably missed her little Ninja buddy too. That may have had something to do with her not being 100% comfortable. I love their love-fest shots. Kei is such a handsome man. :-)

Just talked to Corina she said her leg is fine. She is going to the hospital today to get a shot - since she did get punctured. She said Kei is doing fine. We will probably go on a hike the 2nd week of next month - should be fun!

I'm glad she's getting it taken care of. You guys are gonna have a blast on the hike! :-)

I am glad Corina is okay.

*Jen* Corina got Kei in Japan. He is one of the few (if not the only Shikoku) in the U.S. with NO Peggy or Katja ties.

*Romi* That first picture of Corina holding Kei and Portia for the picture is SO funny because the angle it was taken makes her arms look as long as her legs. I hope you sent her all our regards.

Maybe she should get a Rabies Shot in addition to a Tetanus shot. You never know, some people are VERY irresponsible with their dogs. My old assistant had her dog 4 years and never took it to a vet!!!!

    Yay, I found the thread!

I've been pretty "weird" about dog parks for some time now. I was still kinda "nervy" when we went, but then it didn't seem so bad. -sighs- Honestly, if you are going to take your dog to a dog park, she/he better be very people and dog social or able to ignore others/be non-reactive.

I use to go to a dog park with Lynx when she was a pup. However, I got to know the people and their dogs. Our dogs became great friends. It was actually fun. I stopped taking her though (after her first heat cycle). Then eventually grew skeptical of "doggie loose" places.

I've broken up a few dog fights before, first time that I really got bit though and needed a shot! The doctor also gave me some antibiotics as a precaution against infection. I finished them! I had to take the stupid thing 4 times a day for 10 days...sheesh. Knee area is healing up. It was a minor but semi-serious wound.

Anyways...we're gonna go back and stick to the "just playing with dogs we know". So, he's good. He's got a Malinois, Chow/Lab mix and a Pinscher/Chihuahua/??? mix to play with on a semi-daily basis. Then, of course, those random playdates with friend's dog(s) and training days. Must not forget...soon we'll add other members to the pack.

Thanks everyone for your concern! And thanks for the lovely comments on Kei-kun, my little man is still growing. He'll be 1 year of age soon, in a week or so...yipes!

Hey Corina! did you get your internet back??? I hope so! I agree with you about the dogs in dog parks. But then again, even with dogs who are not reactive or who are very friendly...they could just not like a dog. So it's still a risk regardless of temperment. Portia was not bothered by any dogs. She is not reactive and just ignored the other dogs who approached. After the other dog got their sniff, they left her alone too.

If you're leg is healed up and you and your pups are up for it...do you want to go on a hike next weekend on the 20th or 21st ?
