Do you know a BYB?

edited August 2008 in General
Hello, hope all are doing well! [ human & canine alike ]

---

BYB = Back Yard Breeder.

Definition// 1.A person who randomly throws two dogs together for the sole purpose of gaining profit by selling the puppies. [ the supposed "breeder" does this without performing health checks on the parents, does not get the puppies properly vaccinated &/or de-wormed, & more often than not knows absolutely nothing about proper breeding nor cares to know about proper breeding ] 2. A person who wants "Fluffy" to reproduce so they can have more "Fluffies" 3. A combination of the above in addition to various other ludicrous factors.

---

So, the reason for this discussion...I was standing on the Sales Floor the other day at work talking about dogs with a friend / co-worker of mine. [ Before you say we are slackers for not working, this was when the Hurricane hit, there were no customers in the building & we had absolutely nothing to do ;p ]

Well, we're talking about the different dog breeds, & eventually he tells me about how a friend of his has a Great Dane.

ME: "Whoa that's pretty cool." [ I'm always impressed by their size, though I'm not too fond of the breed ]
HIM: "Yeah, my buddy is trying to find a Male so he can breed her."
Me: "What?!"
HIM: "Yeah, those guys sell like crazy! Do you know he tells me how much he can get for each Great Dane puppy?"
ME: [ now annoyed ] "How much?"
HIM: "A grand easy. And they have HUGE litters."

It just made me so mad :< But more than anything else...it really hit me! I've always heard about BYB's...but I'd never really realized just how close in proximity I was to them...& just how people think it's "ok." Obviously, I wasn't going to go off on he co-worker of mine, HE's not the one breeding them...but still. I said a couple things to explain why it was wrong without talking his ear off [ wouldn't do much good for me to do so ] but it's just...crazy!

Anyone else been in a situation like this before? It made me nervous D:~

Oh & an excellent link on BYB vs. Reputable Breeders.~

I've been in a very similar situation, with a friend/co-worker talking about how a friend of his wanted to start breeding Cane Corso because it would make him loads of money.
I told him that if it's done well(with all the testing, good food, vet costs, careful selection of parents, etc.), it takes a long time to turn any kind of profit, if it ever will. He replied that his friend had done all the math and it would pay off. I told him of a few breeders I have some contact with, that always say it's "an expensive hobby that they love to do" and not exactly something to pay the bills. The conversation ended there pretty much, because I didn't want to get all worked up and he wasn't the one to be blamed.

Oh they are seemingly everywhere. Saw a fugly American Bulldog puppy once. Clearly had a congenital cataract in one eye. NO genetic testing had been performed on parents, and possessed terrible comformation (splayed in front, long body, downhill, cow-hocked...). Was basically walking advertisement for castration. People did NOTHING with him. When he became unmanageable they stuck him outside. He was aggressive and sneaky about it...they type that would bite when your back was turned.

So...some months later, they are GIVEN a bitch. A bitch that is shy. A bitch that has horrible dentition even for a bulldog breed. A bitch that has no business utilizing her uterus.

    This is their breeding program.

Yes, as mentioned before, my boyfriend's dad and his wife are BYBs. They aquired a female last year, who was "accidentally" bred at 6 months old. Now they still have three of seven puppies left, fast approaching 6 months old. Even after all their trouble, none of these five dogs are spayed/neutered. Soon they're going to have severely inbred puppies due to their irresponsibility.

Shortly after we got Jack, a person who works for my dad's company decided she wanted a puppy too. So she went and got a boxer/border collie mix from somewhere. Before she even brought the pup home, she was talking about breeding her. Um... why? You think it's going to be fun? Think you'll make money? These people make me sad.

What in the world ... these people are disgusting. Leave the breeding of animals to those who're educated and actually screen their PUREBRED animals. That is so horrible. I hate to see people think that animals offspring are purely for money-making alone. Those are precious lives. A life that spends the next 15 or so years with you. Money should NEVER be the number one reason to breed, and these idiots who are breeding just because they want money, are sick. :(

People are insane...I just...it makes me more sad than mad really. I just don't get how people don't take the creating of life seriously :(~

I'm too scared to ever breed anything except myself xD Just thinking about the complications that might happen terrifies me to no end. I can't understand the mentality of a full grown adult wanting to breed irresponsibly. Sure I wanted to breed my dog when I was a kid. But I was little and just wanted puppies to play with, I didn't think anything past that lol.

I had this conversation with my next door neighbor who wants to breed their PIT BULL because she has such a good temperament! I kept my cool, but inside I was boiling!!!

Hey Barbara, tell you STUPID NEIGHBOR what I tell Pit Bull breeders...1 in 500 pit bulls find homes. For every puppy born they are killing 499 other dogs. We actually just had a breeder drop off 3 of his puppies because he couldn't find anyone for his pups and his Dam has won multiple awards.

    Growling now...(me, not my dogs...)

I just went for a visit last night. Seeing those pups really upsets me, they're so sweet and don't deserve being brought into the world like they were. Grace (6 mo. female) and Kiba (mother) are definitely going into heat very soon, they were both licking themselves quite a bit, and the males kept sticking their noses down there. I told her to get them spayed ASAP and she told me that when they go into heat she's going to take them to the vet to "get a shot that makes the males leave them alone". Kiba she is getting spayed but seems hesitant about Grace, made some lame excuse about waiting until after her first heat.

Ezekiel is a sweet little boy that needs his own home, in true ACD fashion he would be a velcro dog to his special person. He loves giving kisses and will lick you to death. He doesn't like his littermates much because he's picked on very often.

Uricho - poor Uricho. I want to take him home with me so badly. He's the one that I mentioned breathes really fast and shallow. He's overweight, which I'm pretty sure is the reason for his erratic breathing. These dogs aren't portion fed, there is food out for them all the time. And it's crappy food, Pedigree or somesuch. I am seriously considering taking this guy home if there hasn't been one found for him by next April. I'm torn - if I take this dog, wouldn't that tell them that what they've done is okay? Beyond that, these pups are not housetrained and have not been socialized. I don't know how difficult it would be to shape him into a well trained, polite dog.

I'm also very concerned about the lack of excercise. ACDs need to be very active to be happy. They are maybe taken out to the lake for a swim once a week - and that's only in nice weather. Other than that, they are cooped up in the house with little entertainment, other than barking at passing cars or a short run around the yard. They are yelled at for barking at anything or if they get too rowdy with each other. Poor Zeke (father) doesn't like puppies, so whenever they come near him he gives a warning growl or bares his teeth. Then he gets screamed at or smacked for "being mean" to his puppies.

Sorry for the long post. I just needed to get that all off my chest.

Some people are just determined to breed their puppies they get from wherever (the next door neighbor, pet store). They bring them into my vet clinic and start telling me they want to breed these cute little genetic misfits ASAP and I want to scream, but at least they are getting seen by a Vet and getting vaccinated, so I can't really tell them to f... off. And I know that the really awful breeders aren't even going to the vet so it's a Catch 22. Instead, I try to do my best and scare the pants off of them with disaster breeding/whelping/emergency c-section scenarios and about how expensive puppies are to raise. The money factor seems to be a key tactic when discouraging BYB.

When I was doing chihuahua rescue in high school, I encountered the most horrific whelping experience of my life, it was a standard male and a very small doxie (mix?) female, who ended up hemorrhaging during the birth, one of the 2 pups breached, it was awful. The reason she called us was because she knew the delivery would be complicated and couldn't afford the e-vet. The bitch and one of the 2 pups died, one pup remained, but died shortly after.
Do you know what the owner said? At least she still has Chico (I'll never forget that dogs name, ever) He is a great stud dog, and she was determined to get something out of him.

I have no patience for anyone who wants to breed their dog for the hell of it or any other crap reason. I feel an opportunity for education of the preservation of breeds and responsibility of breeding is never a lost cause.

Kyla - Feel free to share. Sometimes getting it out can help <3

Lindsay - At least you're trying to scare them! Tell them it costs 3000 dollars to breed, just for the "license" lol [ they really should make it a requirement to have a license! ]

Jen - OMG! That's horrible! Not even the mother survived? That's just...uh...people are disgusting. :\~

Jen that reminds me of a girl who bred her 2 year old rabbit for the first time on a forum I used to frequent. If you're going to breed rabbits they have to be bred starting when they're 3-6 months old. By the time they're 2, their bones are rock hard and cannot accommodate kits passing through. By some miracle the mom and one of the kits survived and sadly it gave her the mentality that you could breed old rabbits without complications now. The stupid thing is she had a genetically dominant fault so she couldn't show her and they were breeding her to a buck with faults and of another breed. So basically they were getting bred for no reason.

I know a classic BYB :( She has a bunch of dogs, not registered, not conforming to breed standards, not evaluated in any way shape or form to see if they are breeding quality. She lets most of them run free on her property with the exception of a few who are kept in a dog run. She even told me of a puppy that was born with "health problems" (didn't specify) and she continues to breed the same pair that produced this puppy.

Luckily, she's getting out of the "business" because she's having a hard time selling her puppies.
