Another found doggie.... what kind is he?

edited September 2008 in General
I thought I would share this story and pics with you. My husband's connection with the doggie spirits again?

Last Sunday morning we were sleeping in at our farm (central MN) and a friend there with us took an early morning stroll into the field. As he came back to the house, he saw an unfamiliar dog waiting at the back of his trailer (hitched to his car). After giving a wide berth to go into the house, he came back out to find the most friendly, calm, amazing dog! He seems to be anywhere from 2-5 years of age, loves all the people he met, loves all the dogs he met, and couldn't wait to climb into bed with our friend when he laid down for a mid-day snooze! I did have to tell him to get down when he thought he owned the couch, too!

No collar, no chip in this doggie. We checked with all the local neighbors, all the public places where people might post a notice of a lost doggie, local vets, carried pics on our digital cameras to the local bars on the lakes, etc. No-one knew this dog or had reported him lost. The vet said there are lots of drop-offs going on in the area due to hard economic times, pending huge fuel bills over the winter, etc. Perhaps that was behind his sudden appearance?

Happy ending to this story -- at least five different people who got to interact with this doggie wanted him --- there had to be prioritized list! He went to the woman who made the first claim --she lives with her dad and he said Yes! She is sooooo happy, and so is the doggie!

Having said all that, any thoughts on his breed? Just curious --- I'm thinking maybe a boxer mix of some sort? He's about Josephine's general height, but somewhat heavier --- maybe 50-55 lbs. or so. Little smaller than a pit bull, I guess, but that was the guess of the vet who checked him out here in the city on Tuesday.

Here's a few pics, including one with my son who was number 2 on the list to give him a home.

    Aww gorgeous dog.

I had to ask though, what does chid mean? (his tattoo)

Rina: Well, the tat was the 18 yr. old rite of passage -- he said he chose a Japanese character that seemed somewhat close (at least in sound) to his nickname of "Tido". We later met an exchange student from Japan who said he needed to have one or two dots added to it, to be more accurate to the word/sound he was looking for.

Ooo ok got it. Um, I don't know what that exchange student is talking about though. Looks fine to me now that I know what it's supposed to say.

Yea Rina; My daughter just reminded me that the Japanese student used to say something to the effect that "everything you say in English, I can understand 50% of it"... (and she thought that 25% might be more accurate!)! So, I think he didn't totally get my son's story about the symbol and meaning at the time he was here!

Needless to say, Mr. Tido never had anything added to the tat ... and now mostly goes by his given name. But its amazing to me the number of high school and college friends of his I have run into at random who do not react at all when I ask if they know him using his given name, but then brighten up and start telling me great stories from the past when I ask them about Tido!

Haha that's great. Now all you have to do is find a stray for him to keep :P

Yea, he misunderstood my comments to him on the status of the dog when we talked Tuesday evening and he thought the dog was going to #3 on the list -- he got really upset and started crying "foul play" -- calmed down when I told him the #1 person got the newest stray, after all.

I think he may be looking to buy or rent a house soon, as he just got a fancy corporate job with a nice salary, benefits and all that other good stuff, so he really wants a dog at that point. I guess I'll have to watch Josepine to make sure she does not get "dog-napped" when he comes home to visit!

I think he looks like he has pit in him.

I would say that is very likely a purebred pit bull.

Lucky lady got a beautiful dog.

50lbs would be considered an average to large size pit bull

Jessica: So far that is the consensus view. For some reason I thought pit bulls were larger, but maybe he has been just maintained as a slim and trim kind of guy. I have to say he was by far the sweetest gentlest dog I have ever encountered. He had a fun time romping with Josephine in the woods and the fields, and loved to follow us everywhere we went. He met two other dogs of friends and family members, too, and was just a sweetie with them. Can't imagine why they have such a bad rap! (Well, of course its those people like Micheal Vick, etc. that have ruined the breeds reputation!)

Off topic, but did you see the National Geographic show "Dogtown" last night? They featured the Vick pit bulls that were rescued, particularly four among them that had unique issues making them hard to rehab. The practices of those guys are truly disgusting --- I think there should have been more punishment -- jail time?

I put a pit bull on the news today as the morning news "pet pick of the week" The news caster was also very surprised at how, small, sweet, and friendly she is. I informed her that is because newscasters love to sensationalize things. And that pit bulls like every other breed are "just dogs" nothing more.

Almost every dog trainer I know has pit bulls. They are so affectionate, ready to work, willing to please. Unfortunately horrible people like Michael Vick (sadly only the tip of the fighting world iceberg) have horribly damaged the reputation of one of the most wonderful breeds of dog ever.

In truth, I intend to NEVER spend a day of the rest of my life without having a pitbull in my family.

I love my Nihon Ken, but you have never been loved until you have rescued a pit bull.

Yay! Glad to hear he's found a home :D

I'm going with everyone else & saying pitt :o *jumps on the bandwagon*~

I'm with everyone else on the ever growing bandwagon... Pitbull

He looks gorgeous. I'd probably have a Pit if there were any to rescue over here! Plenty of Nihonken though. At the rescue I help out with we have 3 Akita at the moment.

Really? Unfortunately, it's kind of the opposite here Shigeru. [ with the exception of the number of Shiba, Akita, & Kai ] Too many pitts, whom unfortunately can't find homes. [ I know here in Florida, it is banned to have a Pitt in some counties. Sad, but true. ] ~

I've seen 2 pitbulls in Japan in the past 10 years. All the mixes here are Nihonken mixes.

I vote Pit too - and a LUCKY pit to have stumbled across such a loving home! I'm stocked Josephine has a playmate now - and one that will protect her from those wolves you have out there! :o)

    ----

The saddest thing to me about dog fights is if you ever watch any it is VERY clear that the dogs are scared out of their minds. These dogs are not over aggressive dog eating cannibals, they are undersocialized, abused, scared dogs. It's really very very sad.

Jess- "I love my Nihon Ken, but you have never been loved until you have rescued a pit bull."

One of the most true statements ever! Everyone thinks that Sasha is just Rott cause of her colors, but that is the only bit of her that is Rott. Once people get past the colors of Sasha they see that she is all pit.

I think I will always have a pit and a Nihon Ken. Chad believed all the hype of pits, but he now knows!

You know Brad, when I watched the dog fights the thing I found most interesting was...the poor dogs never attacked the handlers! Any one know why? The two dogs would be ravaging each other...but each person would pull them back & the dogs had eyes only for each other...It really shocked me.~

This dog looks and acts like a staffordshire bull terrior his seems a little small for a pit bull.
  • edited November -1
much to big to be a staffordshire bull terrier.they are only about 30lbs and shiba sized. That is an AmStaff. Period.

osy- that is what makes a pit so tragic. Their soul purpose in life is to please their master even by fighting dogs. These bastards use that loyalty to turn them into fighters.

Well, whatever he is - he's damn cute. I hope he is very happy in his new home.

Incidentally, the American Pit Bull Terrier is different than the American Staffordshire Terrier and the StaffyBull. There is also the morphed form known as the "American Bully". Gets rather confusing huh??
Another reason why banning the 'Pit Bull' is a piss-poor idea!

Here is a video that pokes fun of the 'American Bully'. The APBT is a TERRIER, folks. It should look like one.
