Hachi saved my life last night
I've been trying to walk Hachi alone, and if I have to run an errand, I'll take her with me, or if I'm doing homework, I'll try to have her stay in my general area to reinforce our relationship. It goes well one day than the next she's panic stricken, so its a gamble most days what will come of our "bond".
Last night, I didn't get out of my class until a bit later, so I ended up walking with Hachi right at the nameless hour (dusk). She was walking really nice, when suddenly she does a complete 180, and her hackles go up and she starts growling and barking. I turn around and there is a guy approaching me, Hachi goes berserk and he like sprinted across the street and kept on going. She then went back to walking merrily on her way, only looking back maybe twice.
Whether or not he was going to bother me, we'll never know.
But this I think is rather significant, she's usually completely mellow outside! She loves calmly meeting people outside and is the best walker, totally determined and focused on walk itself. But she was protecting me, right?
I dunno, I might be looking more into it than it actually is, but it made me happy.
Maybe she does like me after all... )))

Good for Hachi.
Rui's been busy at work the past 48 hours so I've had to walk Kuma every time myself. I usually take over doggy duties when I'm home or can make it home from work during the day -early mornings and after work is Rui's shift. This weekend Rui will also have a business trip abroad and that means I'll have to take Kuma out after dark.
I didn't like the idea of taking him out last night at almost 1am, so I only circled our building basically. I let him do his stuff and sniffing every lamppost/tree we went past and then, with a sigh of relief, took him back upstairs.
He's usually really friendly, too friendly, actually with any passerby, so I really wouldn't know if he'd try to protect me in case someone shady approached me like in your case, Jen.
He's a big dog as you guys know, so I just hope they would think better than mug me!
Keep your fingers crossed for me this weekend!
Phoenix, Kuma may be a marshmallow but I assure if he sensed that someone may bring you harm, he would very quickly show the side that makes akitas wonderful guard dogs.
Jay and I lived in a really bad neighborhood for a while, and even though Moto is what happens when a fox and a teddybear do "it" there was more than one time that he magically grew to 100lbs and scared someone off.
Piglet is my luxury as far as safety goes. I mean jeepers she is a pit. She can be wearing angel wings and licking puppies and people run screaming.
Well, I guess I'm not giving Kuma enough credit. He does sometimes "woof" (it's isn't a bark, more like a low woof sound) at the front door when he hears our neighbour in the landing just outside. He does this even when we think he's fast asleep. I thought that was more of a territory thing.
When we're outside he wants to flirt with any passerby because everyone either says how cute he looks or wants to pet him.
Sometimes I even grab a canister when I head out for long night walks, as you just never know.
However I really want one of these:

Or maybe a sweet stun baton:

Niko has rarely ever done that becayse there isnt anyone she doesnt like but there have been a few instances which makes me want nothing to do with those people.

Phoenix - I grantee that if someone shady approached you, Kuma would do his best to protect you and/or warn off the stranger. Even Hilo has protected Jen before and he was beat up by a whippet once!

On campus, I have a stack of heavy books in my bag that would probably at least stun an attacker if I had to, and I love my swiss army knife on my keychain. It took a lot for this pacifist to get one, but I'm glad I have it because campus security is fairly laxed after 5pm.
Nat - I'm sure your teddy bear would go on the defensive when you need it most!!
Jess - "Moto is what happens when a fox and a teddybear do "it" " LOL!!!!!

Nat, Brad: I was thinking of that story of Hilo protecting Jen when Nat mentioned Kuma being a marshmelow. I have no doubt he would show a side of him you have never seen (and hopefully never will see) if the situation demanded it.
I love the fact that a SHIBA scared off a guy lol & they say that Akitas are man-killers ;p ~
The following morning, I told my dad about it which made him happy as he was worried that Yoshi was just too relaxed and too friendly.
Sounds like Yoshi is a great dog, too!
A few days ago we were out walking when Moach saw a lady half a block away and parked his butt on the sidewalk and waited for her. She stopped at every house along the way that had dogs in their yard and by the time she got to us it was obvious she had a bag of treats and was making the rounds.
If nothing else he is an excellent judge of character.
@Brandon: Where did you find a site that sells pink Tasers? Maybe when my kid gets older I’ll get her a Hello Kitty Glock. ;-)
