What's in a name?

edited September 2008 in General
Hey guys! It's me again. I was just wondering how you all came up with the names for your pups! When we thought we were getting a male puppy we were gonna name him Yoshi. (Thank goodness we didn't, because I've found that is a VERY common shiba name! haha) We went through MANY Japanese names and just didn't find one that fit. But when we ended up with our little girl, the name HONEY just seemed to fit. She was as sweet as can be and her color reminded us of the honey that comes in the clear plastic bears. The only other name that came close was one we made up! lol (JuKai) the beginning of each of our kids names. But that seemed to be a mouthful for the kids. So Honey it was!

How about you?

We searched for Japanese names as well, and we liked Keiko a lot... so that's what she's stuck with :o)

Actually, I had never heard the name before, but now everytime I tell someone what her name is I hear "Oh, my friend is named Keiko!" or "We know another Shiba named Keiko!" Kinda funny that it's such a common name and I had no clue! :o)

The moment I held my little Shiba puppy back in January, I just said "Yup. This is the one, Toby."

So, thats how Toby got his name. Actually, the breeder said that Toby was a rather popular name among some of her Shiba-offspring. I didn't even realize how popular it was until I got the little guy.

HAHA Isn't that how it ALWAYS is! Even when naming my kids....I thought I had changed my daughter's name just enough that it woud be unique. NOPE! Now I hear a TON of kids with the same name! lol

Kaddy, What does Keiko mean? Or should I just google it?

Jazz's name was set by the breeder, pretty much. Her full name is Wynhaven's Cme I'm Jazi. Being a fan of Jazz music, we modified it to Jazz. When it looked like we were going to take in another rescue, it was going to be Fletch in memory of Fletcher Henderson - a jazz musician & composer that I like. I also had on my list - Dizzy, Ella, Fitzgerald, and Coltrane.

HAHAH Dizzy would have been PERFECT! Honey is one GIANT Shiba hurricane! hahaha Our house is perfect for it too!

LJ: Weren't you going to change Joey's name to Coltrane after you puppy-napped him from me? ;-)

    ---

I picked Lucy and Joey's names because they were names that had absolutely no meaning to me. People always ask if I named Lucy because of blah blah blah or Joey because blah blah. Nope. Just liked the names and they didn't remind me of anyone I particularly liked or disliked.

I was - he just looked like a Coltrane to me. As you can see, even 5 months ago, I had names picked out for siblings for Jazz. The rescue that I was looking at just struck me more for Fletcher's music - a bit lighter than Coltrane's moody sound.

When I picked Keiko I was under the impression that it meant "blessed one" or "adored child" ... but now I know there are several interpretations depending on the kanji used. Here's a link to a neat site about it

    http://japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa072303b.htm

... when I found it I was hoping one of the variations was "devil child" - it's been a rough day today ;o)

I was originally thinking of calling our dog "Akuma Inu" meaning "demon dog" or "devil dog" because of his reddish coloring. But he was so quiet, so we picked "Yoshi."

We got Niko because after all the research and reading we thought the name fit. And it does!
Niko means Cat like or above the law. The only thing she isnt cat like about is she HATES heights!
We got Sasha because we both loved it and we both had it in mind without telling each other when we met her.
Kitty-because I am very unoriginal and she is so prissy and stuck up nothing else fit.

Nemo came with his name. It was given to him by some shelter workers where he was taken in as a stray. We decided to just keep it.

    OMG NAMES! I'm not going to get mine for another year but I can list off names;

Aether - Which means "Breath of the gods" & all has something do with essence or magic.
Nero - The name of a Caesar / means powerful / strong / vigorous
Neo - This is my Internet Alias, used it since I was 12 :) Means "New"
King - I decided not to ever name this because there are too many Kings :(

    & some others;
    - Athos
    - Dragoon
    - Crescent
    - Dante
    - Fate
    - Aeon
    - Era
    - Ages

Even though I've always loved Japanese names [ Subaru, Ryu, Asuka, Toya, Ayame ] I noticed everyone names their japanese dogs japanese names & decided when I get a Nihon Ken I will stray away from that lol ~

Well Mylie went 3 days without a name... I couldn't find anything I liked, my fiance suggested Mylie, it was cute so we went with it. About a week later I hear that damn Hanna Montana song for the first time, and was seriously angry. To the outside world it looks as though we named our puppy after a 14 year old pop star. Ghay. At least it's spelled different, right? I couldn't change her name at that point, after the vet records and the already ordered name tag. So we call her Mylie Monster, Monster for short. All I can hope for is that this Hanna Montana phase wears out and Mylie has her own name!

HAHAHAH That's too funny! I bet people look at you kinda funny when you tell them your pups name is Mylie!

There are some SUPER cute names on here. I was THIS close to naming our pup Yoshi, we actually called her that for like a day, but it just didnt fit. The next morning I said "well good morning honey"......and the lightbulb came on. It fit! Perfectly! Her sweet temperment, her coloring! Everything!
