Dog Shows?

edited September 2008 in General
Hey all, hope everyone is doing well :)

---

Ok! So, as EVERYONE know by now, [ lol ] It'll be at least a year before I get a pup. My very first pup ever :o I've watched my friends dogs before, but never raised one so I'm super nervous, but also completely stoked out!

To help ease the pain, & learn as much as I can, I've decided to do as many doggy activities as possible! However...the two shelters within a 2 hour driving distance of me are not accepting any more volunteers until next year...& the Florida Shiba Rescue seems to ignore me...so...I've turned to the next best option...Dog Shows!

But I'm SO confused. I'm having difficulty deciphering AKC & UKC website...On this site I'm seeing that the Central Florida Kennel Club is having an event in December, 30 minutes away from me...& if I'm reading right...there will be Akita & Shiba there!

But...I can't find any info on the event! I mean, I can attend it right? Or do I have to be a member? And there's no where that states the time it starts..or anything. Maybe they'll post this as the event gets closer?

I'm so lost, if any one can help out I'll give you much love & hugs & of course spammage of when I take pictures there. [ should have my SlR by then which gets me all the more excited :o ]

Thanks guys! <3 ~

Good questions! I would love to know the answers as well - the only 'dog shows' I ever did were agility trials through 4-H ... and that was like 13 years ago (god I'm getting old!) At least I think they were just through 4-H, although I do have K-9 good citizen AKC things... hmm... never thought about it before...

    Evan...what is "4-H?" lol See how little I know :p ~

I'll send you a link because I know my description could never do it justice LOL I only ever did the dog obedience and agility classes through it - but it's MUCH bigger than that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-H

The last place I taught at was in the country - and I had a lot of students that showed horses, steer, hogs, goats etc. and made enough money by the time they were out of High School to totally pay for college tuition. The money is made after the show when a sponsor purchases the livestock - not the case with showing doggies ;o)

Do you know if they are run through onofrio? You won't the number of dogs registered until after it "closes", which is the registration deadline. I've found in nearly every show I've gone to, shibas tend to be up early in the day. I just scanned onofrio's site (http://www.onofrio.com/shwpubs.html) and it looks like the only one they are showing is mid-december. You can go to the local chapter that is sponsoring website and you should be able to find the registration forms. That'll tell you the closing date, ehich will you give you the time frame to check back for the premium judging list which will tell you what ring, time and judge. Usually these shows are open to the public - most of the ones in Atlanta are free with the exception of parking.

I'm not real big into the dog shows, but I did get some good deals on things at the last one I went to. Evo was there and had a show special - I got my Evo at half-price.

I'm honestly not big on Dog Shows either [ so boring on tv ] but I think it's a good chance to at least see some more Nihon Ken :)

Thanks Lj! I see 3 dogs shows in Orlando on the website, but when I click the link no useful info comes up :o ~

I totally wished I had a dog when I was in 4-H, but just sheep showing for me. :)

I've attended a lot of conformation shows (yes, fairly boring, but a lot of pretty doggies!), a couple herding demos/competitions, and watched agility at 4-H. I've never heard of a show where you have to be a member to attend - in most cases, the clubs putting them on would like as much public interest as possible! I also encourage you to talk to the breeders/handlers if they're not busy. Some of them may blow you off, but most will be more than happy to talk about their dogs. :) They're a great resource.

For a directory of dog shows, go to www.infodog.com
There is a search by state feature. They list performance events as well. (tracking, obedience, rally, agility, etc.)

For a list of abbreviations, look here:
