Dog Food Analysis Site

I just found this great site that gives ingredients and analysis as well as ratings for a LOT of different dog foods - dry and canned. Turns out that the one that Lani and Fuji were eating as puppies only ranked in the 2-star category. They're know eating a 6-star diet. :)

    HI JEN!
I have used that site a lot in the past.

does anyone know who funds that website?
No doubt they have great info, easy to read, to the point. I point many dog owners there who are just beginning to realize what dog food means to their dog.

I think the site has good info on ingredients and how to interpret them.

However, it feels like it is a bit of copying and pasting and I have (that I can remember) one thing in it that bugs me.
    This is quoted from their review of Orijen puppy large;

"The only caution we would make on this food is that the high protein content makes it suitable for adult dogs only, particularly in the case of large breeds."

So this is a puppy food for large breeds that has a 6 star rating. Seems a bit confusing that something that isn't suitable for its target can get such a rating.

I looked over the site and I'm still having trouble finding the right food for Honey. We started out with Eukanuba Rice and lamb and she loved it. But it didnt rank very high on the list. I see alot of you have your dogs on a grain free diet. Is that something that I need to consider? I didnt realize there were so many choices. Everyone we know has always used Iams or Eukanuba?

Iams and Eukanuba are used because they have a lot of marketing power, so they are what people know of. In truth, they are not good foods. Grain free tends to work really well with Shibas. I use and love Orijen, and also Solid Gold's Barking at the Moon.

    Other good brands:
    Innova EVO
    Wellness
    Merrick
    Nature's Variety
    Call of the Wild

There are a lot of threads on here about dog food, take some time to read some of them. There is a lot of great information.

I know where you are at - when I had my husky, we fed him Kibbles n Bits. I had him for almost 14 years and that's what he ate the entire time. With Jazz, I did a lot more research and learned a lot more here. One of the things I did was subscribe to Whole Dog Journal which in their yearly review really breaks down the food choices. I do a grain-free diet, because Jazz has sensitive skin and she has gotten much better since I switched her off of Eukanuba Sensitive skin. I rotate her foods, which she handles quite well. I think Jessica said it "I've never seen a dog go after wheat/rice in the field" (obviously I've paraphrased it...probably, badly).

I'm using Solid Gold, EVO, Merrick...I'm looking into the Natural Balance Grain Free, as well. I'd like to have a solid 4 brand rotation with foods that I can find close by. A rescue that I support sells EVO & Merrick. Everytime I purchase it there (it's a little bit cheaper there, also) proceeds go to the rescue.

We actually tried to give Honey Kibbles and Bits and she picked out all the "Bits"! HAHAHA she left ALL the thin straight pieces. That little bugger. So we got the picture that she didnt like that brand. We only have one TINY pet store here in town but I will have to check out some of the brands you have suggested. And I'll run a search on here for more posts about dog food brands.

We HAVE learned that Honey DOES NOT like raw food. Wouldnt touch ANY of it. So that narrows it down a bit! lol
