Table food that is safe for Honey?

edited September 2008 in General
Hey everyone. Another question for ya! We have keep Honey away from human food so far. But I've noticed that alot of you have mentioned some things you give to your pups.

Just so I know......what are some good things and some things to really stay away from as far as table food goes for Honey? (I of course know not to give her any chicken bones. hahah I knew that even BEFORE I read the thread about piglet! TOO FUNNY! Just glad things turned out alright in that case!)

Check out the threads that are sticky (at the top of the page) - it'll give you some idea of what not to give your dog. I haven't transitioned over to the RAW diet with Jazz, but I do give her a few raw treats.

Thanks! I just went and read the list. I knew most of the "bad" things...but not all of them. GREAT list!

As far as "good" things....I was trying to figure out what raw veggies would be okay. I figure sweet taters are okay (piglet is loving them right?! lol) And I think I read that someone's pooch loves apples? Never thought of giving a dog those. Just hoping for some more suggestions. (Carrots? Celery? ???)

take everything you read online with a grain of salt in terms of what to feed the dog, but this site links to some informative websites (about 1/2 down the page)

If you are feeding dog food, I would refrain from doing too much people food.

Especially with a shiba because they are so small and people tend to treat too big.

But if you want to give teensy bits of meat (I would suggest sticking to fish or foul) and many dogs love veggies and fruits (obviously avoiding toxic ones like grapes/raisins, onions, etc).

And steer clear of grain, breads, corn, etc.

I was hoping to just find a treat for a "every once in a while" kind of thing. I thought maybe Raw Baby Carrots would be a good treat? What do you think? Or maybe apple slices? But on that other site linked above (http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2006/02/homemade_dog_foods.php) it said that apple cores can poison dogs? Is that just the CORE? Or all of the apple?

I'm so confused! Maybe I SHOULD just stick to the dry dog food. lol

i give apple flesh to the dogs with no problems. I think the seeds are the issue.

Apple flesh is just fine, you just need to cut it off, not let them eat the core.

Baby carrots are a good snack for dogs if she likes them. If she likes them enough you could chop them into small pieces and use them as a training treat.

Tsuki loves baby carrots - I cut two up into many disks and stick them in her hollow Kong ball. I also give her frozen peas.

I gave Honey a two baby carrots yesterday. She LOVED them. But as she was finishing up the second one I think she was getting bored with it. She kept tossing it in the air and chasing it around?! I've read some of you give your dogs Bananas? Interesting. I might have to try that.
