akita pups on Orijen?
Hi Brad
I wanted to ask you something about Akita pups on Orijen. Let me explain why.
I was waiting on the new product range of Acana Provincial (no grain), that seem to be very close to Orijen, but with less protein which I thought would be preferable for large puppies. I just got the news that the Portuguese branch of Champion Pet Foods will not be importing that product range into Portugal because of a direct prodcut "conflict" with their own Orijen line.
So, if I want to go grain free, the only options are either Orijen or that Go! Natural, and both of them are high on protein.
Having explained the situation, the question is : How do you see your Akitas on Orijen? I believe that's what you feed them, sorry if I'm mistaken. I've been fearful of giving Kuma Orijen because of the protein levels, fearing it might be kind of an overload on his muscles and as a consequence, on his bone structure. Have you noticed any of those on yours?
Because ow that I know I won't have a moderate protein content (33%) grain free salmon only food for him, I'm thinking on turning to Orijen, but maybe I'llwait untill he's 1 year old since by then the bigger, more intense part of his growth will have passed.
Thanks for your help

We feed all our dogs Orijen, but we will not be feeding our COs Orijen for the reasons you listed.
With Akita, everything I have read suggests feeding them a high protein diet and our Akita do very good on Orijen.
Only Kona [obviously he is not an Akita] shows issues with Orijen, but when we added more pro-biotic to his meals he normalized.
Remember Akita, especially Akita Inu, are "large breed" dogs, not "giant breed" dogs, so the protein restrictions that apply to a dog like a Great Dane don't apply to the Akita. I would not be concerned at all feeding Kuma Orijen.
I hope that helps.

It's helpful, yes. Yeah, Akitas aren't giant breed but, height wise, they can be right there on the verge of it (most LGDs and mountain dogs are between 70 and 80cm to the withers).Sure it wouldn't have the same impact on an Akita that it would have on a Dane since the rate of growth is much slower on the Akita. But still, Akita do have an impressive growth rate.
Anyway, all thoery aside, I wanted to know in practice if you had noticed any structural issues with the Akitas, so...cool, I think I'll transition Kuma to Orijen. I just received a 33lbs bag of Acana, so I'll probably use it to do the transition and get started by the beginning of October to try and have him fully transitioned by the end of the month.
Thanks!
Maybe I'll do a rotation between the Pacifica Acana and Orijen, nad maybe eve with the Go! Naturl that the store is getting too.
When you have the time, I'd like to hear your opinion on the salmon Acana vs Orijen Puppy Large, if you don't mind.
Thank you for your help.
I'll attach the pdf with the analysis of the Pacifica
That's great that Silvia recommends such a nice food, so many breeders recommend the shittiest food to puppy buyers.
I'll get back to you after Jen gives me her opinion. )

Yeah, that was cool. She actually started by suggesting Purina or Nutro always of salmon. But when i told her I was planning ofn feeding Acana she told me it was even better and that she would support that decision. I think she actually gave Acana to her dogs at a certain point, because she had loads of Acana stuff, kind of like the stuff they give to the breeders in their programs.
I didn't give him the Salmon of the normal range because the puppy large seemed better and she agreed, but she told me to give him a bag twice a year or so. Now with the grain free one, I can give him all salmon, no grain without the rip off that is Orijen 6 fish around here (140 dollars a bag!) Como to think about it, the Acana grain free will be 105 dollars a bag...
I finally got with Jen on this, sorry for the delay.
She said she would feed the Salmon Acana to our dogs if it wasn't easy to get Orijen. She said she would highly recommended Salmon Acana. She also said with the large breed puppy vs. puppy vs. adult there is really not much of a difference.
Hope that helps. )

I'm glad Jen agrees with me!
Thanks a lot!
