Hiking with the In-Laws...

edited October 2008 in General
Jen's parents are visiting this week. This is their first time in Taos, and the first time seeing our home here [obviously].

We took them to the Columbine-Hondo Trail, we have hiked this trail three times now. This time we got closer to the top [11k feet]. It was really pretty with all the leaves changing, and the campground was closed so we were basically alone.

We packed Ahi and Kona and Loa walked with Jen's mom and dad. Kona carried the majority of our water, 15lb! Ahi carried 8lb, we are working her up slowly. I packed Ahi's pack with the emergency items.

Here are some pics...

Love the trails there seem to be so many out your way. I take it there are few people or other dogs congesting the area? Here on any given weekend it is a tourist fest. One can hardly find a park without other dogs running off leash. The Shibas are not big fans of introductions with strange dogs, especially if they are on leash and the others are off.

    Too pretty!
Do they love their grand pups as much as we do??

    wow great pics!
    great environment for your pack!
so when is the big nihon-ken get together at your place? hehehe
did the dogs catch anything while hiking out there?

Patrice - There are a lot of off-leash dogs here, its big problem... but relative to where you are I am sure we have less hikers. On this hike, we saw an off-leash Terrier that barked and ran up to Kon and Ahi - they almost had him for lunch.

Rachael - Yes, they LOVE their grandpups. :o)

jikjak - Loa rolled in some horse and Llama poo and Ahi almost got a chipmunk. :o)

Oh, an important point I missed...

Lani did GREAT with Jen's parents!!!

She was still a bit fearful, but she approached them and was 99% better than she was the last time we had visitors. Seems the Thyroid meds and training is helping!

Romi - There may be hope for her to hang out with you when you visit! :o)

Wow, that looks like the PERFECT hiking weather! And the forest setting is breathtaking. It looks like you guys had an amazing day.

That's AWESOME news about Lani. Between Ninja and Lani, we're finally starting to get some good news on this forum! Keep up the good work with her and give her a big hug from me (I'd do it myself, but I don't want to undo all her progress ;-)).

Kona is amazing with the weight he's packing... little mule, did you say? No, I'd guess he minds better than that, seeing how nice he sits for the camera! Thanks for sharing the pics of the trail, etc. Beautiful! Makes me want to get out up north this weekend in the beautiful fall colors at our farm...

Looks like a great day for a hike. Sounds like Lani is making nice progress.

That little terrier had NO idea what it was getting into! Ahi would rather have a terrier than a chipmunk any day!!
    YAY Lani!! That is awesome!

Pictures are beautiful! And what gorgeous weather (at least it looks goregous).

Glad to hear that Lani is doing good with Jen's parents. :) And wow, Kona is a strong little doggie! If only I could get Bella to pack that much! It would take such a weight off my back... Maybe I just need to teach Eric to pack more in his pack.

It's great that Lani is doing better, the training is working, and the thyroid meds should be helping too.

The landscape is so pretty! Looks like a really serene hike :)

    Kona + Pack = THE cuteness. :D

Brad, any reason why you guys don't pack Loa? ;)~
  • edited November -1
Loa has never packed before, and since that was a long hike we didn't want to start her on it. She is also pretty small, so she really wouldn't be able to carry much of anything.

One day I would like to pack the Akita, but I want to wait till they are totally done growing so it will be a few years. Not Hilo tho, he is not very "sure footed" so I don't want to add weight to him.

What a beautiful day!! And the trail is just gorgeous! That's awesome that you all like to hike. My mother would NEVER go on a hike. Neither would Kurt's parent's.
