Brada1878 I need some advice

I am looking to get an Akita Inu and want to make sure its from a good breeder. Do you know where I can get an Akita Inu? You seem to have a lot of knowledge and someone told me you have an Akita Inu. I have a shiba inu right now and was wondering if you could help me out? Do you have any recommendations and some helpful hints on getting one and raising one with my shiba. If you do I would really appreciate it.

Hi Brandon - Yes, my wife and I share our life with 4 Akita.

First off, I recommend rescuing an Akita. There are plenty of great Akita that need homes, even puppies if that is what you prefer.

I recommend the following breeders [in no particular order]:
    - Akita Inu O'Chanur (France)
    - Shun'you Kensha (Spain)
    - Akita u Izis (Poland)

*I recommend these breeders because I have had direct contact with them in the past. We have Akita from "Akita Inu O'Chanur" and "Akita u Izis" and our Akita share bloodlines with dogs from the "Kensha" kennel.

Also this is a good resource for finding Akita breeders all over the world. You also may want to read this and this for tips on finding a reputable Akita breeder.

    As for helpful hints...

    - DON'T RUSH! Take your time and find a breeder you are comfortable with. Do what you need to be placed on their wait list [any good breeder will have a wait list] and wait. The wait will be worth it, I promise.

    - Don't get caught up in the show lines. I really like Emilie's [Akita Inu O'Chanur] breeding program because she titles her dogs in obedience, agility, and shows. Generally she does an amazing job with caring for and socializing her pups.

    - For the first 2 years your Shiba will be the problem not your Akita, after 2 years you need to make sure they have a GREAT relationship before you leave them alone together. Akita have prey drive and will give chase to a crazy little Shiba running around.

    - Your Shiba is a boy right? If so, I would get a female Akita. Get a male if your Shiba is a girl.

    - Whoever you get your Akita from make sure they screen for eyes, hips, knees, elbows and blood [Thyroid & etc]. There are lots of health issues in the breed.

    - Plan to only use positive reinforcement training with your Akita!

Thank you for your help Brad I have emailed a few and I am waiting for a reply. If I were interested in shipping an Akita Inu from overseas how would I go about doing so. Do they speak english? I really like the looks of Akita Inu O'Chanur Japanese Akitas. Does seaisland Akitas have Japanese Akitas? It looked like they had mostly American Akitas. Also how much do you think it will cost me to get one? I havent really asked anyone prices. I know Im hitting you with a lot of questions so feel free to take your time but I appreciate your input.

The litter I mentioned to you in the whisper is, I believe, a blended litter. That means they are American x japanese. In America there is only one type of Akita, the "Akita". In other countries they are split. I prefer the Japanese "type" too, but if you speak with breeders in America you will get an earful if you ask for an "Akita Inu" - the split/merge of the breed is a touchy subject in the states.

As for the european breeders, most speak English. Emilie at O'Chanur speaks English and is a member of this forum.

As for price, depending on if you get one from a breeder in America or Europe I would expect to pay $500 - $2500. To ship from Europe to here I would expect the cost to be $2000, depending on how the dollar is doing. If you have to ship from CAN or from a different state I would expect the cost to be $200 - $500.

    Hope that helps.

If you decide to go with any of the European breeder I can help you with the communication and the shipping [not that I speak any other languages, I have just done it a lot].

Yea that sounds great. I know what you mean about that being a touchy subject. If I do decide to go overseas I will definetly ask you for help since youve done it before. I appreciate the offer. I wish I had the opportunity to own a pack like the one you have that must be pretty sweet. I think miisan akitas are 100 percent japanese because I spoke with him on the phone and I have been put on a waiting list but he told me it is not first come first serve and that was a little confusing.

"Not first come, first serve" means that even though you are on a waiting list for a puppy...if somebody else he knows or feel is more suited to the kind of temperment/personality of pup, he will sell to them instead.

I would recommend to continue to corespond with your breeder of choice. If you can, try and meet up at a few shows, get to know your chosen breeder and let him/her get to know you. It'll make him/her more feel more comfortable selling a puppy to you. Also...let her/him know what kind of temperment/personality you are looking for in a puppy that would best suit your lifestyle.

I hope this clears any confusion you may have had.
