What would be your choice for the new "First puppy"?

edited November 2008 in General
I figured I'd start this thread and see what you all think. What breed would you suggest for the new President Elect and his family? It HAS to be a Hypoallergetic ( I hope that's the right term?) dog since one of the girls has allergies.

Here's a link to a story I found on this subject. Looks like one of the girls wants a "goldendoodle". *sigh*

Here's a link to a place that is taking suggestions.

P.S~ Are shiba's Hypoallergetic?

Hehehehe, it's funny to see the whole thing around the presidential pup.

My two cents go close to home, to a Portuguese Water Dog.

I don't think Shibas are Hypoallergenic. Because they shed their coats all year round in small tiny amounts, but blow their coats twice yearly.

Unlike the poodle-y kinda breeds, that only shed a little.

I love Portuguese Water Dogs, there is one that lives near us and Miso and him play on the beach. He (the water dog) goes running head first into the ocean and Miso tries to go after him but once the water hits halfway up his legs he runs out.

Funny thing about most "hypoallergenic" designer breeds is that most of them have environmental or food allergies. We see more Labradoodles, cock-a-poos and Daisydogs through the derm service here than other breeds. I say a Portuguese Water Dog, they are actually really smart and active dogs.

    What is a daisydog?

Beats me....maybe a Bichon/Havanese/Shih Tzu cross? They look like every other foo foo dog you've seen, as if we didn't have enough foo foos to begin with, lol. Almost like a Havanese with curly hair.

Here's one for your viewing pleasure. Although this one has straighter hair and is slightly cute.

I say Bichon Frise or poodle or some derivative thereof. A Bichon would probably be the least harmless and unassuming for the media to consume and twist.

The one thing that comes to mind if they get a Goldendoodle as their puppy --

"Well, if the president has one, I should have one, too! Let's find a breeder, adopting is stupid blah blah."

From what I understand no dog is hypoallergenic. The allergies come from the skin dander rather then the hair.

    But I could be wrong... :o ~

The President Elect luckily is working directly with the Humane Society to ADOPT their puppy. It is why he was actually the first candidate endorsed by the Humane Society. He made a point to say he would be adopting.

I am thinking rescued Greyhound. I know they want a puppy... But they ought to lead by example in my opinion. And if they want a breed that does not shed (much), the greyhound would be one!

Edit: Whoops. I posted too late! Thanks for the info, Jess. I am glad he will be adopting. Maybe he should just get a mutt then. I think that would make a pretty big statement.

I'm sure in their search they will find a cute little dog that will take the nation by storm. It can't be easy having the nation watch your decision of a dog just to judge it, but I hope they can set some good examples simply by adopting their First Dog. That speaks volumes for me.

They should probably just get this, I would if I was the President.

Sigh, I had a big feeling they would go for a "doodle" but hopefully whatever dog they get it's from a rescue or pound and encourages people to adopt (probably too much to hope for). They could do allergy shots, FOR THE GIRL! instead of making some poor dog be born hypoallergenic :) What about a Xolo or other hairless breed?

My favourite "non-shedding" breed is the soft-coated wheaten terrier.

    Good choice, Heidi!
It's one of the few small breeds I like.

I'm with you heidi, I'd go with a Wheaton. I had one growing up and he was a fantastic dog!
  • edited November -1
I love Wheatons! That would be a good choice.
    ...
I was under the same impression about the pet dander Osy - that it was from the skin, not the hair.

    ahahhaha, kwyld, that is funny,

I've met some sweetheart Bichons, so, if they found one that was cool with kids I think it would make for a good photo op. Better than some silly "Doodlepoo". The really important thing is that the dog fits in with the family otherwise, no matter what the breed or mix, they'll have problems. I hope they can find a way to adopt a dog, if not from a shelter, than from a breed rescue.

In answer to the 'are shibas hypoallergenic" thing - only if they are covered in cling wrap. (* Just a joke. Please don't go wrapping any shibas in Reynolds Wrap or anything!*)

Nancy... LOL! I can just picture Bella and Nola tearing around the house in Seran Wrap! Hahahaha! And two seconds later, it would be shredded all over the place. I second the just a joke... i would never cling wrap my doggies... bubble wrap*, maybe, but not cling wrap. ;-)

    *again, just kidding!

    Kelly - LOL!

I think he should rescue an Amstaff.

BRAD I WISH HE WOULD RESCUE A STAFFIE (but I am sure there would be some huge political broohaha especially after his opponants VP candidate made the Pit bull joke) However he said something kinda cool at a press conference I saw yesterday (I am paraphrasing here) that being that he is a mutt he would likely adopt something similar.
  • edited November -1
Yea, I saw that too - made me think of my brother. He has said something very similar to me. Makes me smile.
  • edited November -1
we saw that live (I think) and we just laughed our butts off. It was cool.
  • edited November -1
Ahhh--- aren't we all mutts of some sort anyway?

    Hope he adopts a rescue,,,,
  • edited November -1
Looks like a decision has been made. It's a Portuguese Water Dog. Apparently Senator Kennedy adopted it from a family that couldn't care for it and now is giving it to the Obamas. So I guess it's a rescue, but you know the media isn't going to portray it that way.
  • edited November -1
    Ah...of course.

    Interesting choice, tho. ~

    At least it's not a doodle... :P
