My other hobby is (part 2)

edited November 2008 in General
I figured with all the new members we'd start up a new thread to continue Jen's thread.

What are your hobbies when not tending to your animals and everyday lives?

When not browsing the internet I could be found playing PC games, reading a book, baking and currently learning how to crochet (though the cats do make that difficult) I love to go camping, fishing and hiking but we don't get to do that too often. After Spaz is here I plan on taking advantage of the swimming pool and tennis courts in the apartment complex because I LOVE to swim and was a pretty good tennis player back in the day hehe. Hopefully I could learn to have a decent colored thumb to have our own makeshift garden/forest on our patio.

I'm pretty lame I guess. All I do is work and dog stuff...I can't get enough. That's me in a nutshell. Sounds like it's time for a hobby!

Update-I found my hobby, I'm officially addicted to dog shows.

Inside hobbies: scrapbooking, cooking, cross-stitching, and I've just found a way that I can learn how to knit, so I'll probably start that soon.

Outdoor hobbies: Swimming, photography, hiking (before knees & feet problems - hope to be back doing this within the year), rafting, and baseball games.

I am a semi pro cheerleader for the New England Football Leauge. Although our season runs from July to September it keeps me busy year round since I am a captain I recruit new members and I also have to choreograph next years routines.

I am a classicaly trained ballet dancer and also have taken classes in hip hop and jazz.

I love to go to the beach (in summer) and just hang out outdoors. I sew a little bit and also into scrapbooking although not as deep into it as I will be once we buy a house and I have my own craft room.

this semester has been ridiculously and overwhelmingly busy! I have to change my hobbies to zilch since its just keeping house, dog duties and reading reading reading and papers papers papers.
-> If any of you have ever worked in higher education or have any involvement with University English departments, "Straight Man" by Richard Russo is one HILARIOUS book!

My biggest hobby right now is picking up the slack for my dead-beat girlfriend who thinks all she has to do is study...apparently aspiring doctors need to do a lot of that ;) (obviously kidding here, but it does keep me quite busy). Other than that, hockey, roller blading, skiing, reading...usual stuff I guess.

Since starting grad school while I continue to work full time, I am left pretty much without time for hobbies :(. However, when I do have breathing space, I like to hike, read, scrapbook, and do photography.

Forgive my ignorance, but what do you guys mean by "scrapbook"? Am I over thinking this? Is it just putting pictures together in a book?
  • edited November -1
It could be a photo album or something of that nature that is embelished with material, stickers, fancy papers, glitter, etc. It's also a place to store things other than pictures, like in one of mine I have fortunes from cookies I found inspiring...and a pawprint of Miso's from when he was 12 weeks old I did with paint (he hated that!). I call mine a keepsake book rather than a scrapbook.

Dave - did you not look at Jazz's scrapbook when we had that meetup? That one is fairly simple. I just finished my niece's prom & graduation pages - 15 pages and just over 10 hours worth of work to do so. The time can be in coordination of inks, stencils, layouts, selection of pictures, stamps, die cuts, stickers, etc.

LMAO - Dave, I said the exact same thing when Kristen first talked about scrapbooking...only I wasn't so diplomatic about it!! Actually, one of my close friends is really into it, sells scrapbooking stuff and hosts scrapbooking parties as a part time thing...apparently she actually does quite well with it. Anyway, I think it's just one of those things that guys just don't understand

Oh, good point LJ. I did see it.

Mike, you're so right. I had no idea there was such a big deal surrounding it. I have yet to meet a guy that enjoys it (or at least admits to enjoying it ;-)).

My husband thinks Im nuts, don't worry guys.

I don't know any guys that are into it - however, my favorite pages were done by my brothers. Before my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I convinced each of my brothers to do a page (read 1 here) for a mother's day album. Each of them did just over 3 pages where they wrote special memories with my mom. I completed that album at the end of March and mom was diagnosed with her terminal cancer in April - we gave the book to her early. It was her favorite thing to show people - it included pictures from when we were young and current photos with all the family. Even the grandkids had a part.

I usually take one night a month to work on my scrapbooks.

Kristin - I include lots of stuff in mine as well - tickets, programs, money (Chile, Canada, etc.), I think it adds to the memories and pictures. I've recently started buying postacrds when I go places to include in the book - the postcard usually has the best possible pic and then I add my photos as well.

I think it is funny that guys are not into it, but if you do one for them, they tend to get really excited about it. I have some pages of some of my male friends from undergrad (one of their soccer games on recruitment weekend) and when they all saw my book they decided I should just do one for them as well. They also get all excited when the girlfriend does one... It always cracks me up to watch them go "look how much time she spent on me!".

I have pictures and memorabilia in mine, so they have anything from ticket stubs and newspaper clippings to photos and letters. I tend to over document...

Nicole - I was looking in to pitcher plants, mainly in the summer when we seemed to have so many bugs sneaking in the house. However, what do you feed them when the bugs are scarce? I have never had before, but always wondered.
  • edited November -1
Nicole how the hell do you manage to keep flytraps alive? Like I said in my plants and trees thread, I can't even grow Chia pets. Though our last flytrap got eaten by the cats.

I'm still into photography, currently trying to find a way to make a buck out of it :-)
And lately I'm kind of addicted to this video game about poker...
  • edited November -1
Ruh ro Rui, video game about poker? or actual online poker? Don't piss your money away man, most of those things aren't truly fair. :-/

Video game about poker, I'm dumb but not that dumb, hehehe

    It's called Governor Of Poker.

    Funny story about online poker....

The University of Alberta has the world's foremost research group in poker playing programs. They have now had two man vs. machine poker championship matches. The first was Ali Eskime and Phil Lokke (sp?) vs their machine, and the humans barely pulled it out in the end. They both split $20k for their winning which totaled about 24 hours of play over the course of three days (not a bad pay rate eh?). During his "down time" between computer matches, Phil made more than 20 times that playing against real life suckers online in his hotel room. When it comes to poker, its best to look your opponent in the eye (or sunglasses ;-)).

My interests include reading mystery stories (P.D. James, anyone?), traveling just about anywhere that I have not been, walking, X-country skiing, obsession with all things about my kids and Josephine, and sitting out on a beach or by a campfire (or both in combination) on a starry or moonlit night....

When not catering to the whims of my Tosca, I can usually be found doing something having to do with opera: practicing at home, reading libretti to learn the pronunciations, studying my repertoire for my lessons, listening to recordings of singers worlds better than myself and trying to figure out what they do that I don't, having a lesson, rehearsing at the company in New York, or actually performing.

I also love to cook and bake. I enjoy shopping and reading. I'm forever looking for a "real" job. Oh, and I'm going to turn a collar into a stunning holiday necklace for Tosca since she likes my jewelry so much.

If none of the above is occurring, I'm online and/or watching TV or a film or out with friends.
