Is my shiba a shiba?

edited November 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Ok....I may be paranoid, but I noticed that Noche (my new pup shiba) ears may be to big for his face..wich concerns me if he may be mixed....can anyone confirm this (I cant remeber if sol and luna had big ears as a pup)

I find that some shibas do indeed have bigger ears than others, just like some shibas are taller and heavier than the standard.

Double check with the breeder for a pedigree (if that pertains to this pup) for certain bloodlines and purebred shibas.

Puppies are often out of proportion. That's just part of the growing process. He looks like a Shiba to me. :-)

Looks like a shiba that hasn't grown into his head yet. A shiba with normal sized ears but a small face will have ears that look large, and a shiba with big cheeks and a wide face with normal sized ears will also look disproportionate. If the ears are too narrow set or too high set it will throw off the head piece. But...this is a pup and has a little growing to do (also some furry cheeks to grow). Very cute black and tan.

I agree with everyone else - I think he looks like a shiba. Ninja was really hefty as a pup - I thought he might have been a mix - but he grew into his body and is within the standard size and weight now. Noche is really cute!

We have had a few puppies, and I can tell you none of them grow the same. One day they look lanky and strange, the next day they look fat and stubby. Give your pup some time, Noche will fill-out and grow to look like a "normal" Shiba. No worries.

thanks all, I figred he was..and wife tells me I am just being crazy..but wanted to make sure..either way he is adapting nicely..today Sol, Luna and Noche have had tehir first indy 500 around the house....I have no idea who was chasing who..but it was amussing. Noche also discovered the shiba jumping power..he leaped onto the couch like it was only an inch tall, hehe...and he picked up on his name already (just 3 days) he also he understands "leave it"... somewhat.

Noche is a cutie! His light tan ears probably look larger in contrast to his black coloring... A trick of the coloring to some extent! Keep the pics coming... What an adorable little guy (and smart!)!

he is a beauty.. yeah the light coloured ears stand out alot more..it looks like you stole my leo and portrayed him as your own...he is very like him...take a look at my pics...

Again..I have no idea how you guys can take pictures of your puppy sleeping. Mine refuses to sleep out in the open! He hides under the couch or just waits to pass out until he's in his crate. None of this cute sleep wherever he can stuff!

Yup, yup! A Shiba for sure! Toby looks lanky and funny as a puppy, but he's nice and chunky thick now. ;)

Well, noche had his first visit with Sol and Lunas boo boo fixer yesterday, and he said he is a very healthy boy shiba...he stated the exact smae thing you all did..that hes a pup and will grow into his limbs..hehe. Noche went for the office tour, they loved him...I went to the car to get his first vet visit and he was gone..all the staff members had him on the back ugoling him (maybe I should have charged..hehe).

On another note my vet noticed something VERY quick that I already knew..Noche has a Napoleon complex, He said that although shibas are very independet dogs..this one will be a little more than usual (tell me about it) he said it was good that he is a pup so he will learn his place with Sol and Luna..not to fear if they snap at him, because they are simply telling him his boundaries..I saw this toon, Sol and Luna have shown fangs at time to noche..wife would get nervous..I stood there and watched, I did notice their hairs on the back never sttod up..so I knew they were not mad..just putting him in his place. I helped re-enforce their rules by saying leave it to noche when he got to out of hand..which helped, he has started to chill with them and now they hang around him more.

Great to hear! Shiba puppies are always a big hit at the vet's office...they're irresistible. It sounds like your pack is forming up nicely too.

I'm also very worried that my shiba is not a shiba, he looks like a german shephard puppy, some one tell me i'm not being crazy.

Guinness has large ears, and he has very long legs.

Just an akward shiba pup. Sake has very long legs too and big ears.

did he come from a breeder?

I'm finding that shibas can have a few different looks, some longer legged than others, some longer fur than others, some shorter tail than others, some features (ears) more prominent than others, some markings more deep or obvious than others. I guess its all up to the discretion of the person breeding the dog.

yes he came from a breeder and mom and dad where there and they were beautiful, but his legs are so long, and ears so big, that i started to question it, when i picked up my dad's puppy on saturday.

Quinn is the white puppies name.
