Frost- thanksgiving update
Sorry for double posting
I used "private whisper" to seek answer from Brandon_w for a question. But I wanted to share update with all anyway.
Hope all of you had great Thanksgiving.
We had a great 4 day weekend with Frost. We were home most of the time. So he was out of the crate quite a bit of time. What we found was, after his morning run/exercise he used to just lounge around, sleep in short naps, just be where we were. He did not attack drywalls, did not shread anything. So I guess he is much more trouble when he sleeps whole day while we are away and then his engines roar when we come home.
Now that it is getting coooolder( smile please) in Minneapolis, I am training him to do his busineess first in backyard before we will take him for a walk. We will play with him (even at 6:30 in the morning- fetching balls in the backyard). he needs atleast 20 minutes of exercise between his meal and poopjob. I dont know if it is a shiba trait or what. So far the cold is bearable so we still go out.
do your Shibas take long time to poop? my neighbour's dog do their business under 4 minutes and are back in. I am waiting for the day where he will go out do his job and come back..
Brandon, since you are Wisconsin, how long shiba should be in extreme cold for his poop job. 20 minutes? I am talking when temps go below zero or we have major windchill?
We also had some snow around thanksgiving and Frost had a blast playing in the snow, eating snow. The funny thing was when the snow will get compacted by your shoes, he will try to steal that and run away..
I am also experimenting him little bit unsuperwised in the morning after the run while I am getting ready for office. He seems to be okay and not get into lot of trouble.

20's - Can stay out all day long. Nemo LOVES this weather, even wind and snow do not bother him.
10-20 - Usually 45 minutes top, down near 10, if the wind is blowing it can be under 1/2 an hour.
5-10 - half hour or less, depends on the wind.
0-5 - 15 minutes or less, usually less. If it's this cold it's usually windy too.
0 and below - outside only as long as it takes Nemo to do his business. If he wont poop quickly we head back inside and I'll take him outside again in an hour.
However Nemo is not prone to accidents (peed inside once in 4 years), one time he really had to poop and he ran around like crazy panting and scratching at the door. Frost might do the same sort of thing. Also I do not take Nemo out to potty right after dinner, it's usually a couple hours later.
I'm sure you and frost will work otua great system. I would suggest purchasing Musher's Secret. It's a wax for your dogs paws that will help protect them from the cold and more importantly the sidewalk salt.
