Diarrhea...Vet visit???

edited December 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Nobu's last four bowel movements have been watery diarrhea. Is this a sign of something serious? I was trying to find information on the internet, but came away with mixed results. Should I take him to the vet?
We are now withholding his food for the next 24 hours, but he does have his water. I was thinking about feeding him some boiled chicken tonight. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I would go to the vet just in case. He is a pup right? He may have a parasite or something that needs medication. Boiled chicken and rice I think works well, but I will still go to the vet.

A trip to the vet never hurts. You could also give him a peptobismol tablet if he will eat it.

It may sound gross, but did you examine the poop for worms, blood, or anything out of the ordinary?

He's a week shy of 5 months and has all his puppy shots. I did examine the poop but did not see any worms or blood.

You will not necessarily be able to see parasites from general view and if you can it is pretty bad.

Get a fecal and take it in to the vet for testing. Boiled chicken and rice is good until you have an answer from your vet about the fecal.

My rule with diarrhea is the same for the dogs as it is for kids and myself - if it happens once or twice, it's no big deal. If it's persistent or there are other symptoms, then it needs medical attention.

    Hey Brian,
During Thanksgiving and Friday, Ichi was playing all day in the in-laws backyard (he's usually asleep during my work hours in a crate). Ichi rolled in some animal's poop on Friday in the in-laws backyard. He came back with a shitbeard and I had to give him a bath. Not long after that, he had inconsistent diarrhea. On Saturday, we took Ichi to a dinner party from 6p.m. to 12a.m. (after he'd been up all day) and he had all sorts of people wanting to pet/hold him. I accommodated them by handing him over to them backwards and the got a chance to carry and pet him. I'm sure his nerves were shot by the end of the night.

So, in summary, long car rides, all-day playing, rolling in animal poop (possibly ingesting it), and a stressful dinner party night where he met a bunch of strangers, caused Ichi to have diarrhea through Sunday night. Monday, I took his relatively wet poop to the vet for a fecal and they said he was clear.

Hopefully Nobu hasn't done anything stressful or out of his routine in the last few days?

I hope Nobu turns out okay. Now, I'm not surprised anymore at how stress can stay with a Shiba for days.

I agree with everyone. Diarrhea for a whole day would give me cause to get the dog to the vet.

Hope I see you guys Sunday at Central Bark on Sunday. I may go Friday night (mini weekly Shiba meet-up) and Saturday morning as well.

    Jesse,

I was planning on taking Nobu to the dog park tomorrow, but I'll have to see how he's doing tonight. What time on Fridays is the mini shiba meet-up? I would love to meet more OC shibas and their owners.

Rumor via the other Shiba owners in my apartment complex and the other dog park attendees is that they come at around 5:30 - 6:00 (around 4-6 Shibas). I've yet to make it so I'm going to try to wander over there tonight to see them. I know Saturday morning is super busy so it'll be a great opportunity to introduce Ichi to other dogs (I can't seem to sleep in on the weekends anyhow).

So, can't promise any Shibas will show up tonight since I've yet to see them as well. My current count is only seeing one B&T on a Saturday morning (Kaya), with her owner Kevin.

Can you e-mail me Kyle's e-mail addy so I can get us three connected/coordinated somehow? :) Last weekend Delilah and Ichi saw each other, along with Murray and...forget the boxer's name on Sunday at noon.

We can always change the day and time for our meetup for whatever works for you.

    Jesse
