Dog pee and front legs

edited December 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Do dogs naturally learn how to pee legup?
My mercutio is 6 months and only sometimes lifts his leg. Most of the time he just stands and pees and if anything lifts his front paw up to avoid the splashing. It's so funny to watch but....I hope he can start peeing like a boy..

My boy generally lifted his leg only when he was marking, and squatted when was relieving himself. I wouldn't give it too much thought.

Prior to Yoshi getting neutered, he always lifted his leg. After he was neutered, he only raises his leg when marking. He'll usually mark after an encounter with an unfamiliar or unfriendly dog.

Jack still does not lift his leg. He's 7? months old.

If you look at a wolf pack, only the alpha male and female lift their leg to pee. All other wolves in the pack, regardless of gender, squat or stand.

Nemo always lifts his leg, sometimes he lifts so high that he almost falls over, he has peed on two legs before (with both right legs off the ground). Sometimes he does a walking pee where he alternates which leg is lifted.

However I have met many male dogs that don't lift to pee, only to mark.

Miso just squats when he needs to go. He only lifts when he is being Macho and marking territory. He is 1year old.

Remy tries to lift his leg but he usually loses his balance, stumbles a bit and ends up squating. But its probably because he contorts himself into the stragest positions to avoid the slightest little bit of pee touching his legs!

Toby tried a few times, but hes nothing but a squatter. ;D It's so funny when he does try to lift his leg, its only a little bit, and it looks like he can't keep his balance.

Dear little Ike (Mr. Sin) will lift his rear leg so high in the air, almost like he is doing an air splits. I haven't seen him squat. He is always on the search for the tallest thing to pee on, or drop a poo on. Ah, boys.
Since Ike came home, Beebe doesn't lift her leg to pee anymore but she still kicks her feet a little after pooing.
I think it's mostly about status and marking vs just having to go.

Kitsune rarely lifted his leg until he started to walk behind our male foster dog, now he lifts and marks after the other male. Its a riot.

Kohji always lifts his leg, News is almost two years old and has never lifted his. I have seen Taj lift hers to pee higher up on bushes in the backyard or in the parking lot at training class too.
