To Hell & Back Again

edited December 2008 in General
Literally! I've been going mad the past few days & haven't even touched the computer since Thursday :(

Well, I've been super stressed the past few weeks, it has been the worst week of my life thus far. [ getting better... ] Well, I haven't been monitoring my iguana, Shinra, very closely. I noticed he was turning grey, however, I assumed he was just shedding. Then I noticed he wasn't eating...which is normal if you're shedding. Then I noticed he wasn't sleeping at night...he keep waking up & moving around.

So Thursday night I pulled him out of his enclosure [ normally a few strokes on the head from me will put him to sleep ] only to notice he was in pain whenever I touched him. He'd start breathing really heavily and open his mouth...so I put him down & when he walked I noticed he was dragging one of his legs :(

No emergency Herp vets, I wasn't sure if it was broken...if he was sick...if he was dieing...I almost had a heart attack. I put him back in his enclosure, stroked his head so he'd fall asleep, only he kept waking up every twenty minutes in pain. I stayed up until 6am watching him, I had to stop him from falling a few times since he stays on the top parts of his enclosure...

In the morning, I called the closest Herp Vet, I brought him in...Apparently, there wasn't enough Calcium in his Diet causing his bones to become weak and thus his leg splintered / broke as a result.

So, after going through that complete hell, the Doctor said he should be fine since we caught it early. We're giving him 1 cc of liquid Calcium once a day and he'll see the Vet in a few days. [ to have his cast changed ]

It was pretty crazy, we had an x-ray, drew blood, everything. My poor baby is still in pain, & he's not eating, but he's feeling better [ moving around more ]

So the total cost of fixing my baby was $222, but I can say without waver that if he'd asked me to pay 10x the amount I would have gladly done so.

I will have to get some pictures of him in his cast for you guys. When I called in late to work & told them why I was late, they were like..."Your what broke his what?! Are you serious??" lol~

Aww poor Shinra. I'm glad you caught it early too and got away with such a cheap vet bill.

Just curious Osy, how big is his enclosure? Must be huge for such a huge iguana.

haha yeah, I'd say it's about three feet tall & three feet thick. He himself isn't too big though, he really small & girly for a boy iguana. :) ~

Awwww poor guy! I am so glad he is feeling better!

Uggg Osy. That's awful. I'm glad he got checked out and his problems can be addressed. I know how stressful it is when you've got a dog that is in trouble and there's nothing you can do about it. And luckily you came away pretty cheaply. I don't recall the last time I had a vet bell that was only $222.

Give him lots of head pats from me. :-)

haha oh Yes!! I was SUPER thankful! In all honesty, I was expecting to get there & they'd tell me we'd have to euthanize him :(

$40 for the check up, $40 for the cast, $80 for Blood work, $60 for the x-ray, $10 for medicine, etc. etc.

He was also an awesome vet :) You could tell he really loves animals, Shinra tried to bite him when he was examining his leg [ something he's NEVER done before ] & the vet told him, "I know you want to bite me, but you're so weak right now it wouldn't hurt. So let's get you better so next week you can bite me and make it hurt." lol

Yeah, I think this will probably be the vet I go to for my pup. Friendly staff, the place is clean, I think they've won me over. [ they also offer pet advice when you're on hold rather than try to sell you stuff lol ] ~
