So I guess according to that lady, we should refer all cream shibas as mutts, since in the US they are not breed standard. She makes it sound like Tosca chose to be nonstandard, as if she chose to wear an unfashionable outfit. Tosca is a gorgeous pup, and that lady is a disgrace to all mankind and should go jump a bridge bringing the idiot count down by 1.
And in reference to the pit comments earlier, they may not be my choice in a breed, but I've met more good pits than bad. Our neighbors had a pit (unfortunately he passed recently, at the young age of 2yrs, from antifreeze ingestion but we think he was purposefully poisoned) who was a big muscular thing that barked at everything, but even my mom's chihuahua was able to chase him away if he had become annoying. He was friendly and gentle, a big chicken and a doof.
Firstly, you never say that about someone's dog UNLESS-you are a dog show judge, you are in a dog show, and you were paid/asked to offer your opinion by the owner. Then feel free to criticise constructivly but never just walk up to someone and go off about their nice pet! I like Tosca and like the majority of shibas she has her unique little marks (there is no perfectly conformed dog). Beebe is a mess-25 lbs, gangly, almost no urajiro, looks more foxy than like a shiba, huge ears, allergies, etc...but she's a good girl. I bet Tosca makes a wonderful girl to live with because she's healthy in addition to her charms, that's something even I don't have with Beebe and I am probably one of those "show people" or soon to be with Ike. Anyways, what a cow for ripping on poor little Lady Tosca. The nerve!
Some people should learn their manners and keep their mouth shut! We don’t go around and dis their children’s clothes or ugly hair color so what right do they have to dis you pup? She has no right to dis on you for RESCUING a dog you have her fixed and you are not breeding her. Who cares if her coloring is off a little bit as long as she is healthy and well behaved. I would prefer a mismarked dog to a dog with health or behavioral issues any day.
I have voiced my negative opinion only when I feel someone is doing a disservice to a dog like breeding an unfit dog ie health issues or behavior issues or when or encouraging bad behaviors like bringing an aggressive or ill behaved dog into my store or to the dog park.
Jessica - I to have been told I should be ashamed of myself for owning a "killer" dog. However I still introduce him to as many people as I can just to prove the critics wrong. Boo is just a big pit bull lap dog :-)
I'm sorry that happend to you santuzza no one has rights to come up and say such things to you about Tosca I think the coloring on her is just beautiful and don't let her get to you I've owned a white boxer named pearly I was lucky I never ran into someone like that though I'd always get comments like is she a pit bull I guess I know how people feel when people ask if your shiba inu are a fox. lol
When picking out a dog I don't care about breed standard if I'm paying for a show dog then yes and I do plan to eventually rescue a shiba inu when I do any color will be fine and any marking too and when picking out a breeder and a puppy I care more about health of the puppy and it's personality more.
"You're posture's not that great... eyes are kind of on the beady side... your butt's waaaay too big... You should remove yourself from the gene pool ASAP."
You know, I wouldn't mind so much...if I was able to SHRINK it!!! I run 6 miles a day and all it does is turn the fat into muscle! I wan the fat to come off, not become more well developed! Grrrr.
Argh, I hate buying pants! A&F, Aeropostale, and other brands sometimes forget about people who actually have butts when they are designing their pants. bleh.
I've been doing parkour for a little over a year now and the butt is one of the hardest things to shrink! I got Sasuke to train with me... He's walking on ledges and doing little precisions now... It's great!
At first I was concerned about the urajiro of the dogs when I was looking at the breeders, but when I got my puppy, I realized non of it mattered anymore and couldn't have asked for anyone else. We're still able to turn heads anyway
Tosca is a very beautiful girl, she looks just like my Niko who is also a rescue!!!! Its very amazing how much they look alike!!!
Honestly, i know what the standards are for a shiba inu, but yet i really don't care, my boys get amazing attention when they go out, I'm constanly having people ask what they are, and wanting to be near them!!! We cause a major distraction anywhere we go!!!!
Niko is taller then most shibas!!!! Guinness(puppy) isn't as soft as Niko, he's also got very large ears that i really hope he grows into. Niko's tail doesn't curl as much as Guinness's and Niko can make his straight all day if he wants to.
So both of them have different characterists, but i love them....Tosca is beautiful, don't worry about what someone else thinks....one thing i have learned being in the show car scene, is opinions are like assholes, everyone has one!!!
Here is a picture of Niko, to see how much they look alike!!!
Wow, it amazes me how tackless people can be! Money certainly can't buy taste or tack. Allow me to echo what has already been said thus far, Tosca is truly a lovely example of colouring! Of course, I'm more than a bit biased having my own red headed black and tan, Ichiro.
Ichiro has on several occasions stopped traffic in our 'hood in Chicago with his unique looks. We cannot go out for our walks without several people commenting. My husband, who generally takes charge of the 5 PM outing always has a story or two. My favorite two are the woman who LITERALLY stopped her can and RAN out to ask what kind of dog that was, he was just so cute! (There are about 5-6 shiba's in our 'hood, so it must have been the colour combo!) Then there was a walk where a mother and daughter were walking behind. The mom was visiting her daughter, we live on a college campus here. My husband over heard the daughter saying - look Mom, that's the dog I told you about on the phone last month!
Last supporting red-head case... One of the shiba owners who has a standard black and tan always mentions how good looking Ichiro's colouring is and that the red head should be standard!
As yet another example of how good looking these red-heads are, I'm attaching a (very poor) picture of Ichiro with some of his favorite toys. Please excuse the quality!
I'm pretty much on the same page as everyone else here. Breed standards are good because it keeps good breeders aiming for the right things. If I were buying a pup, I would be looking for a breeder following the standard.
That being said, I have a so far from the reputable breeder/breed standard dog it's rediculous: Remy is a creamy and he is a puppymill dog...but he's also a rescue. He is an absolute sweetheart and is quite possibly the most complacent and tolerant dog I've ever met. I couldn't care less about his past, non-'standardness' or how much 'the man' puts him down. He's not a show dog (though he loves to show off), he's a great (albeit trying) companion and that's all I care about
I say Tosca quite beautiful and you shoulda bitch-slapped that snooty... Well, you get my drift

Maybe I should edit my previous post.

It makes buying pants hard! As I have a small waist, big butt, & am short...but too tall for petites! Ugh.~
