Why do you have to go THERE?!

edited January 2009 in General
Well, since Shinra [ Mr. Iguana ] broke his leg he's been "crated" in order to stop him from climbing. [ his normal enclosure is very tall and if he climbed there is a possibility he could break his leg again ]

Now, because he's not use to being in a confined space for so long, I let him out to walk around the living room.

So, every few days I let him out...& of course...he poops a few minutes after I've let him out..right on the rug! The whole house is tile, but of course, he HAS to go on the rug.

And he NEVER poops in the crate. He will hold it in for two days if he has to, then when I let him out he goes to the rug and poops.

Why are you doing this to me Shinra? Why?

Good new is only one month more to go! ~

Can you potty train iguana's? LOL

Oh yes, iguanas are actually very clean & smarter than most people think. He wont go in the crate because that's where he sleeps, so he holds it in til we let him out :\ They don't like to poop where they spend most of their time.

In his real enclosure, he has a "designated" area to go at the bottom of the cage. When he needs to go, he climbs all the way down goes there, than returns to his spot at the top of the cage.

When he was a baby he use to have an "open area" where he lived & he had a litter box that he use to use. Never once had an accident.

The only problem is once they hit sexual maturity & mating season comes around they'll start..."marking." & that is why he no longer free roams. *sigh*

    Little brat!~

Your iguana is like a Shiba!

is there a potty area for your Iggy in his temp enclosure, or is there not enough room? Could maybe, before you let him wander bring him his normal potty area in the big enclosure, like taking a puppy outside so he won't pee in the house sort of thing.

Maybe he just prefers a "padded" toilet seat to a cold, hard one.

    I'm with Heidi.

I think animals just prefer soft surfaces to hardwood. It's confusing to them too. Grass is soft and dogs can pee there....I'm sure iguana feel the same way.

Silly Osy... you think a puppy will provide you with any more logic than Shinra?

But I had a beardie for a while, and he much preferred his "sand box" to any other surface for his potty time

Oh! The area in his big enclosure where he normally uses the restroom is actually carpet...the same colour as the rug too. *DUH!*

His royal highness has to have carpet beneath his ass in order to go. You know, the SAME carpet is in his crate, but if he went in there that would make him "dirty." :)

Ah well, if my baby heals fine he can poop wherever he wants. I'm just happy he's feeling better! ~

I had a bunny that was litterbox trained... He was so cool! I think my grossest pet I've ever had was my firebelly Newt... I just couldn't handle the live bloodworms when I fed him... I hate worms.

I'm glad your Iguana is healthy again!

Ughhh I know what you mean! I've raised Betta Fish & they love bloodworms! I squirm just seeing worms on the sidewalk, feeding them I almost had a heart attack.

Blech. Thank God iguanas are vegetarians!~
