Fort Lewis, WA/American Lake hike

edited February 2009 in General
The mom and I took a nice hike down by these old infantry barracks near Fort Lewis. The trail went along this training route I guess so there were all these old obstacle courses that the soldiers use to train with, like monkey bars and sit up ramps, balance beems ets. The dogs had fun doing mini agility runs on them and hunting for mice. Ike confiscated a golf ball, Beebe found a mouse nest within 10 minutes and rolled in it after killing the little critter (gross), reaffirming my belief that if my dogs were to ever become wild, they would be able to fend without much trouble.

That sounds like a perfect place to go training. I love your Shibas and their harness. They look so hardcore, yet cute at the same time: A perfect combination!

Fun, fun, fun! I love the pic of Ike guarding his golf ball! Good to hear Beebe's a mouser ---- the world has too many rodents in my opinion.....

Dave, Kristen-Well, yes, I do let her off lead in enclosed areas with caution.
Basically, if we ever plan to title in Obedience or become successful at Lure Coursing and Agility, she needs to have a good recall and that will only happen if we do a lot of practice under mega distractions but in safe areas, the base is fenced. Shibas are totally capable of succeeding in dog sport but they take a hundred times more work in certain areas (like recalls and focus) than say a GSD or Aussie. Anyways, I'm not trying to turn her into a Golden Retriever, but I know she can do these exercises.
Putting her in her little spy vest also gets her in the right mood for working :) She's still a pill, though.
