Dog Parks!

edited February 2009 in General
Kelly really loves it there. she appears to have so much fun there. However she seems to have too much energy and usually tires out the rest of the dogs there. she ends up running laps by herself which is quite funny. always gives me and the other owners there a good laugh.

a serious situation was when i started playing and petting another dog. she ran over and tackled the other dog and started growling and showing her teeth. i corrected her immediately and had to leash her. the majority of the time she was outgoing and friendly though.

anyone have any funny or interesting dog park stories?

I just recently started going to the parks. At first I kept Sasuke leashed. Now that I found out he is fine with males, I let him go. Lately he ends up on the floor with usually 2 or more dogs nipping at him (today a boxer just stood on top of him and would nip at his neck if he tried to escape while another dog had his tail and legs). He also tries to outrun other dogs but they always seem to make him fall. I think they are teaching him bite inhibition so I just let it go. He is also less mouthy when we get home, so I think getting beaten up at the park is a good thing, but it is sad to watch.

Most Shibas can hold their own at the dog park but, do be careful anyways. If dogs get too rough, it doesn't hurt to separate them. After all, at the dog park, you are Sasuke's protector. :)

At the dog park near me, I do have to watch sometimes. People bring dogs that should not be there, and some have turned aggressive/started fights with other dogs. The dog park can only be as safe as you make it. If things get too rough, I swap sides. If a dog picks on Toby, I remove him from the situation because it does bug him after a while, especially when all the dogs gang up on him.

He has the heart of a big dog, but none of the other dogs see this. When Toby goes into the large dog area, he is seen as a toy.

When it was still warm here, Tetsu was young and Tikaani wasn't born yet, I take Tetsu to the small dog section. Cause of his rambunctiousness, most of the small dog keepers where thinking he was being vicious and trying to kill their dogs and their reactions were such. These are the people who have the "pocketbook" type dogs, except for the chihuahua people. Since these people reacted this way, I had to constantly break up Tetsu's play. Luckily, there would be the random french bulldog or boston terrier that Tetsu could chew on.

Now that it is winter, little dogs don't come out to play, so Tetsu gets to have his day with the big dogs. Since it is so cold out, the most dogs I've seen were about 10, just the right amount to keep it under control. So now I have Tetsu chasing a great dane, and Tikaani hangs by our legs yelping whenever a pack of dogs comes running his way. Come summer though, Tetsu will be going back in with the small dogs, as the big dogs can be as many as 50+ and it is hard enough to find him as it is.

A funny note, Tetsu was never a big humper. Before he was snipped, he would hump Tikaani sometimes during play. He would also seriously go after any italian greyhound in the park, and he was persistent. I guess he's a big chest, small waist kind of guy.

When is it too rough? He always plays with a lot of teeth but never any other signs.

He also likes to run to big dogs when he hears them growl.

If other dogs pin him and he reacts and starts making lots of noise, i'd say it might be getting too rough. Sometimes it can be hard to tell.

But, all dogs are different in their reactions, the best thing to do is watch and assess. Then take action when you think it gets too rough.

I've had very ridiculous comments told to me at the dog park.
I've already had some lady tell me 'good thing my dog is spayed!!!' for Toby sniffing their dog. Dogs 3 times larger than Toby have mounted him, and owners never did anything. In the meantime Toby was being violated and was reacting badly and flipping out on the dog for doing that.

I don't avoid dog parks, but I try my best to go on downtime.

Miso Loves the dog park. He doesn't really care much about the other dogs, he just loves to run and get out all his zoomies. Sake finds the biggest dog in the park and tries to play with them. Last time we went she made buddies with a Tibetan Mastiff.

There aren't many dog parks around us so we have to drive 20-30minutes to get to one. The only one we frequent is the one where the Shiba Meetups are held. The other dog park is HUGE and there are way to many not so well behaved dogs there.

Im glad we will have a nice big fenced backyard soon. That way friends can just bring their dogs over and have playdates rather than going to the park.

Having a backyard is the best way to go. :)
Though, I don't think anyone on here lives close enough to me without wasting a ton of gas. xD
