Shiba Independence

edited February 2009 in Behavior & Training
Ninja is 1 1/2 years old this month. In the past week I have noticed a huge difference in his independence (i think). Usually we come upstairs to get ready for bed and settled in around 10pm-11pm. And I go to bed between 12am-3am. Ninja and Portia always would follow us up when we would come upstairs.

The last 3 days - Ninja has been sleeping downstairs in the dining room or even all the way down under my desk in my office on the first floor when we go upstairs. He didn't come up until I call him up to go to bed around 12am-1am.

His usual sleeping spot is under our bed or on the couch in our bedroom. The past few weeks I have noticed during the day that he would sleep on the couch in the living room or on the floor in our dining room, while i'm in the office...but he would always come upstairs to our bedroom when it is time for bed.

Last night I had to carry him up to our room because he would not come up. Have any of you experienced this with your shiba's?

Moto stopped sleeping with us every night at about a year and a half. He would periodically grace us with his presence. But he definitely became more independent.

Tosca occasionally wants her sleeping space (like when she's been scolded too close to bedtime and is still huffy about it), but even if I go to sleep without her there, she's almost always there to wake me up.

Hmm. That is interesting, maybe he's finally "settled down?"

I'm sure he still loves his mum & dad tho ;) ~

Mika and Keigo sleep with us, but Mika was about two when she started asserting her independence. However, the new house gets really warm on the second floor (radiator heat), so Mika will occasionally sleep on downstairs when she's too hot, but she always ends up in the bedroom with us. Keigo still follows me to the bathroom - he'll be 4 this year. Even when I go from the living room to the kitchen - he can see me from the living room - he'll follow me.

Miso who is 1 year old sleeps with us, but when the bed gets too crowded or if I am moving too much for his liking he will huff and puff and move to the couch in the living room. He doesn't like being poked or prodded by my feet while he is resting :)
