Of Nihon Ken & Sleeping

edited February 2009 in General
haha ok, I figured it was time for another random Osy question ;)

Whilst I've babysat dogs before for friends & family for a few hours at a time I've never actually lived with a dog...so here's my question...

What is the sleeping schedule of your dogs / nihon ken? For example, my cockatiels wake up around 6am, take a nap around 1pm, & sleep at around 10pm. [ give or take a few hours on each time ]

What's the sleeping schedule of your dogs? When do they wake up? Nap? Do they adjust to your schedule, or do they nod out after a certain time?

Probably a stupid question, but one that's been eating at me for a while now haha :) ~

I think my dogs nap somewhere in the vicinity of 20 of the 24 hours in the day. Honestly. As adults, it seems if they are not playing with us or one another, walking, eating, etc., then they are always sleeping!

Nemo wakes up with me at 5. He is up for about 1 hour and 15 minutes until I go to work. Then he sleeps with Jennifer until she gets up, then he sleeps on the bed by himself and she has to drag him outside to pee. From 8:15 to 3:00 he sleeps in while we are at work. Possibly getting up to adjust his sleeping position, but he doesn't do much more than that. Then we go on a walk when I get home from work and hang out for a bit. By 5:00 I'm usually getting dinner ready and he is napping again. He gets up when we sit down to dinner at like 6:15. Then usually hangs out with us for an hour or two playing or whatever, and we take a walk. When I head to bed at 9:30 or so he happily runs into his crate to sleep for the night. So he probably sleeps 17+ hours a day.

He likes his schedule. On the weekends he is more than happy to sleep on our bed all day if we are busy doing anything.

Jazz wakes up when I do because that's when she goes out - if I sleep late, she sleeps late.Once we go walk and come back in, her going back to sleep depends on what I'm doing - if I'm getting ready for work (I swear she knows by the clothes), she goes back to her crate, curls up and goes to sleep. If I am dressing for home, she'll initiate play for a little bit, or hang around whatever I am doing. Jazz goes into whatever room that I am going to be in, curls up and goes to sleep. She's asleep about 20 hours of the day (based on the borrowed nanny cam I used).

I must have a broken shiba...I can't believe you guys have dogs that sleep for +17 hours a day! Mine gets up at around 6:30 or so and let out to the bathroom. He's fed and out and about for about an hour before we head to work. I'm back home around 12:00 to let him out again to go to the bathroom and possibly a 20 minute walk, if no walk, we play a bit, he eats, and he's back in by 1:15. I get home from work at around 6 p.m., we let him out to go to the bathroom. Depending on whether we eat out or not, he's fed and we leave him out for about a good 3 hours. He gets an evening walk and last potty break at around 8:30-9:15 and it's a 40-minute walk. He's usually in his crate by 10, begrudgingly.

He's definitely not energetic, but he's definitely not as sleepy as often as you guys' shibas are. :) I'm envious, because if my shiba is sleeping, it means he isn't formulating a way to try and destroy something...

Jazz dreams about ways to try & destroy. My favorite is when I get up to leave a room, Jazz will sigh, stretch, follow me to the next room, locate a new pillow (she has pillows in almost every room), lay down on it, sigh again, and nap some more. Her busiest awake time is when I come home from work - she's pretty active for about an hour then it's nap time.

Our Shikoku, Shiba, and Akita will sleep until around 9am w/o making any noise.

Kona, on the other hand, wakes up at 6am every day - and wakes us up w/ loud barking/crying around 6:30am.

If our Akita are not wiggling, eating, drinking, on a walk, or using the bathroom they are sleeping. At night, if we go out to dinner, we come home and find Hilo sleeping on the couch. When we open the door to let all the pups out Hilo will get off the couch, walk outside, and go back to bed.

Loa, Kona, and Fuji spend a good amount of time playing during the day. Lani and Hilo will play a bit, but they sleep most of the time. Ahi sleeps a good bit too, but that is because she is confined a lot more due to her injury. Maui is always stressed out - so he is always hovering in a corner of the house or pestering Jen. Kaia sleeps a lot, she and Hilo can usually be found sleeping in the same general area.

My dogs like everyone elses sleep most of the day. Miko rises at 5am, Jay comes down and prepares their food. He brings Piglets food up to the bedroom. She wakes up to eat. Then once she is done eating she hops in bed to sleep again. Jay and Miko go on a walk and then Jay goes to work. Piglet and I get up at about 730. We go outside, tend to her business and then when we get downstairs, the girls sleep til dinner time and walk time. Then we come home and they sleep on the couch until it is time to go to bed.

    Basically, dogs sleep A LOT!!!

Roxy wakes up at 4:30 am when Tim is taking a shower. He lets her out to potty while Ryu is still happily snoring away. After her potty break, Tim puts her back into her crate. She wakes me up at 7:50, on the dot, and I let them both out. They play outside until breakfast at 9 am. From 9 am to 5 pm, they sleep in the office while I work. They usually have 2-3 bouts of play and 2-3 romps in the backyard but they mostly sleep. When everyone gets home between 4 and 5, they are busy assaulting everyone and demanding kisses and petting until about 7 pm. The usually sleep while we eat or catch up on tv shows. They go out one more time around 9:30 and then go to bed right after wards.

The pups sleep in our bed during the weekends. Roxy will get up at 7:50 am, again on the dot!, and Ryu will sleep in as long as I'm in bed :)

    Interesting question Osy! :)

    Well Osy;

Believe it or not, the wild and crazy Josephine sleeps at least as much as the best of the other dogs on a routine day. Having said that, (on some days it seems there is little routine around our house) she usually goes for a walk about 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. (before work), but will vary that time and sleep in on the weekends. All the walks for purpose of relieving herself tend to last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, and involve much sniffing and seeking squirrels and rabbits, and sometimes rambunctious play with one or more neighborhood dogs. Weekdays she gets a car ride for about 35-45 minutes to chauffuer me to work. She sometimes sleeps in the car, but will sit up and look out the window some days. She also gets a walk sometime around 2-4 p.m., than another car ride to chauffuer me home. In her end of the day rides, she seems more interested in having the window open and poking her nose out in the wind. (Maybe just because its warmer, or she's more wide awake?) She will have a walk again around 6- 8 p.m. most days, and always a final walk before my hubby goes to bed (anytime between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. As far as I can tell, she sleeps almost all of the time in between including taking the signal from me to nap in the living room while I take my pre-bed nap on the couch (about 9- 10 p.m. until midnight), then goes to bed in our bedroom on her other bed when I retire for the night after taking my nap. Her sleeping during the day and into the evening can be often interrupted with happy greeting / begging for attention behavior whenever my husband, my daughter or her boyfriend come or go from the house; or if the cats come upstairs to visit. Any interruption to her sleep does not seem to be stessful or detrimental to her.

On a non-routine day (i.e. at the farm, at the dog park, friends or family visiting, another dog with friends or family visiting, etc.) she is constantly willing to sacrifice whatever amount of sleep time is required to partake in walks and runs in the woods, digging mice out of snow banks, meeting and greeting and being petted, roughhousing with any other dog, chasing partridges, chasing bunnies, etc. etc. etc. On days we go to the park we can be there anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Farm time means she if often in the woods or fields for 2-4 hour stretches, sometimes several times in a day. These breaks in schedule have proven to have no detrimental effect on her demeanor, energy level, etc. In fact, she seems to like them alot, and will always be game to go for another long walk/run, for example, even if she has already spent 3-6 hours in the woods or running through the field at the farm. And if she has spent considerable amount of time at the dog park, she will still be excited to rumble with any one of the neighbor dogs that are her friends!

I guess Josephine's activity level and schedule (and most likely any other dog) is directly proportionate to the amount of fun and frivolity they can experience. She is very lucky that my husband is almost always home with her, and my daughter, b/f and cats are around here a lot, too. Many of her days are non-routine and she likes that just fine!

My dogs sleep half the day, too. When they're not out for a romp or eating, they're usually curled up sleeping in whatever room I'm in. If I go to a different room, they follow me and lay down. Even if I'm only there for a few minutes, they'll still "sleep" until I leave and then follow me out again.

Oh yeah - and they used to be antsy at night, waking me up on a fairly regular basis and just being noisy or destructive until I learned that dogs tend to get a boost of energy after being fed. I stopped feeding them at night and moved their meal to the morning and now they sleep like babies. Well, better than babies, actually, because babies wake up at night all the time.

    Thanks so much guys!!!

I never realized just HOW much they slept haha Whenever I have a dog over I spend the entire time playing with them....so I guess I don't get a chance to see them sleep!

    Thanks for sharing <3 ~

Kuma spends his day sleeping too. He'll come to us with his rope toy when he wants to play, we'll play with him and he goes back to sleep. Or he'll bother Nyx a bit and then go back to sleep. Or go out and then go back to sleep...you get the idea :-P

Your question should have been what's the schedule for anything else other than sleeping, lol!

I think Miso and Sake sleep about 17-20 hrs per day. Except the days the dog walker comes...then they get a 45 minute play/walk session in addition to our normal morning play and our evening walk. Sometimes I have to force Sake out of bed in the AM just to go pee before I leave for work. She loves sleeping!
