Of Nihon Ken & Sleeping
haha ok, I figured it was time for another random Osy question
Whilst I've babysat dogs before for friends & family for a few hours at a time I've never actually lived with a dog...so here's my question...
What is the sleeping schedule of your dogs / nihon ken? For example, my cockatiels wake up around 6am, take a nap around 1pm, & sleep at around 10pm. [ give or take a few hours on each time ]
What's the sleeping schedule of your dogs? When do they wake up? Nap? Do they adjust to your schedule, or do they nod out after a certain time?
Probably a stupid question, but one that's been eating at me for a while now haha ~

He likes his schedule. On the weekends he is more than happy to sleep on our bed all day if we are busy doing anything.
He's definitely not energetic, but he's definitely not as sleepy as often as you guys' shibas are. I'm envious, because if my shiba is sleeping, it means he isn't formulating a way to try and destroy something...

Kona, on the other hand, wakes up at 6am every day - and wakes us up w/ loud barking/crying around 6:30am.
If our Akita are not wiggling, eating, drinking, on a walk, or using the bathroom they are sleeping. At night, if we go out to dinner, we come home and find Hilo sleeping on the couch. When we open the door to let all the pups out Hilo will get off the couch, walk outside, and go back to bed.
Loa, Kona, and Fuji spend a good amount of time playing during the day. Lani and Hilo will play a bit, but they sleep most of the time. Ahi sleeps a good bit too, but that is because she is confined a lot more due to her injury. Maui is always stressed out - so he is always hovering in a corner of the house or pestering Jen. Kaia sleeps a lot, she and Hilo can usually be found sleeping in the same general area.

Basically, dogs sleep A LOT!!!
The pups sleep in our bed during the weekends. Roxy will get up at 7:50 am, again on the dot!, and Ryu will sleep in as long as I'm in bed
Interesting question Osy!
Believe it or not, the wild and crazy Josephine sleeps at least as much as the best of the other dogs on a routine day. Having said that, (on some days it seems there is little routine around our house) she usually goes for a walk about 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. (before work), but will vary that time and sleep in on the weekends. All the walks for purpose of relieving herself tend to last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, and involve much sniffing and seeking squirrels and rabbits, and sometimes rambunctious play with one or more neighborhood dogs. Weekdays she gets a car ride for about 35-45 minutes to chauffuer me to work. She sometimes sleeps in the car, but will sit up and look out the window some days. She also gets a walk sometime around 2-4 p.m., than another car ride to chauffuer me home. In her end of the day rides, she seems more interested in having the window open and poking her nose out in the wind. (Maybe just because its warmer, or she's more wide awake?) She will have a walk again around 6- 8 p.m. most days, and always a final walk before my hubby goes to bed (anytime between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. As far as I can tell, she sleeps almost all of the time in between including taking the signal from me to nap in the living room while I take my pre-bed nap on the couch (about 9- 10 p.m. until midnight), then goes to bed in our bedroom on her other bed when I retire for the night after taking my nap. Her sleeping during the day and into the evening can be often interrupted with happy greeting / begging for attention behavior whenever my husband, my daughter or her boyfriend come or go from the house; or if the cats come upstairs to visit. Any interruption to her sleep does not seem to be stessful or detrimental to her.
On a non-routine day (i.e. at the farm, at the dog park, friends or family visiting, another dog with friends or family visiting, etc.) she is constantly willing to sacrifice whatever amount of sleep time is required to partake in walks and runs in the woods, digging mice out of snow banks, meeting and greeting and being petted, roughhousing with any other dog, chasing partridges, chasing bunnies, etc. etc. etc. On days we go to the park we can be there anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Farm time means she if often in the woods or fields for 2-4 hour stretches, sometimes several times in a day. These breaks in schedule have proven to have no detrimental effect on her demeanor, energy level, etc. In fact, she seems to like them alot, and will always be game to go for another long walk/run, for example, even if she has already spent 3-6 hours in the woods or running through the field at the farm. And if she has spent considerable amount of time at the dog park, she will still be excited to rumble with any one of the neighbor dogs that are her friends!
I guess Josephine's activity level and schedule (and most likely any other dog) is directly proportionate to the amount of fun and frivolity they can experience. She is very lucky that my husband is almost always home with her, and my daughter, b/f and cats are around here a lot, too. Many of her days are non-routine and she likes that just fine!
Oh yeah - and they used to be antsy at night, waking me up on a fairly regular basis and just being noisy or destructive until I learned that dogs tend to get a boost of energy after being fed. I stopped feeding them at night and moved their meal to the morning and now they sleep like babies. Well, better than babies, actually, because babies wake up at night all the time.
I never realized just HOW much they slept haha Whenever I have a dog over I spend the entire time playing with them....so I guess I don't get a chance to see them sleep!
Thanks for sharing ~
Your question should have been what's the schedule for anything else other than sleeping, lol!
