Training Etc.
Yesterday I got a chance to actually catch an episode of “It’s Me or the Dog” with Victoria Stillwell.
She talked about the use of adversives in training and the results . If you get a chance to record it or catch a repeat of this episode today it is worth a watch. BTW Bull dogs are classified in the same category as Shibas as far as non –lassie like compliance i.e. independent, they will muscle through discomfort in most cases but the end result may not be what the owner’s expect.
It's Me or the Dog
Episode: Bullheaded Bulldog
Description: British Dog trainer Victoria Stillwell teaches her own brand of English manners to an English Bulldog with attitude.
Also, I have included a link here to an old web page may help in defining some types of training methods and definitions in regard to teaching and training. Some of the information once you drill down is still valid today although some of the embedded links within the articles may be outdated or offline.
PS: I forgot to mention the halter Victoria ends up asking the owners to use is a Sporn halter, it is pretty effective for reducing pulling. I have had good luck with it on Shibas.

I hope they upload that episode onto Animal Planet's website, thats how we watch Its me or the dog.
They are both fantastic episodes. Victoria has always been a proponent of positive training methods, but she is now becoming a VERY vocal opponent of punishment-based methods (which I'm all for). Her show does a fantastic job of pointing out many of the dangers and drawbacks to using punishment in training.
So, I second Snf's suggestion. Do watch that episode if you can. It really is fantastic.
Though, if you really want to see the effects of shock collars, watch the idiots on Youtube try it out on their own necks.
Thanks Patrice!~
