I'm so excited about dog food!

After reading over all of the food threads and getting some great feedback, I went on a hunt to my local pet supply stores. I found them! ALL!! Foods mentioned I mean. I love my town. They had all the 5 and 6 star dry foods, can foods, treats, nutrient supplements and even RAW diets (a full freezer of it). The greatest part…. They were comparable in price to brands like Science Diet!

They had all the big ones like Solid Gold, Innova Evo red meat (GREAT price too), Wellness, Wellness Core, Canidae, Merrick (can only), and Natures Balance.

They even had some from the ‘Dog food analysis’ website that I hadn’t heard mentioned here such as Pinacle and Natures variety instinct. I think my breeder feeds the Natures variety so that definitely works out.

I can’t believe I’m so excited about dog food, but it is so great to know I have tons of options!

So now another question…. I’ve seen a lot of you say you rotate food. Why? Is it a preference or better for the dog?

Well, part of the reason I rotate is the protein levels - Evo has a lot of protein, for instance. As well as I wouldn't want to eat the same thing all the time, so I rotate. brandon_w is the first one to mention it to me, and Jazz definitely likes it. She'll get kind of bored by the end of the bag, but gets all excited at a different variety.

    Awesome on the food find!

Not all dog foods are formulated the same, so it is beneficial to provide some nutritional variety in your dog's diet.
Some people rotate dry dog foods, others (like myself) rotate on a weekly basis between meals of grain free kibble, homemade/dehyrated foods +meat sources (like Sojourner's Europa or Honest Kitchen formulas) and raw foods (like green tripe, chicken parts/organs, whole fish, rabbit, etc).

Nature's Variety features their approach to a rotation diet between dry, canned and frozen raw on their website:

I made the same discovery the other day. Turns out I have a Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies right down the street from my house.

the way I explain rotating foods to my friends is

"Let's say you ate baked chicken, asparagus and whole-grain rice tonight for dinner. It's a great healthy meal! But if you ate that same meal every single day for the rest of your life, would you be getting all the nutrition that you should be getting?"

Just because you find one healthy meal doesn't mean you should limit yourself to that meal forever. :D

Thank you all for the great links and advise. I especially liked the link for natures variety. I'm very stoked on the kibble-can-RAW diet rotation the web link explained. I didn't think I would be interested in RAW diets, but they make it so easy to incorperate just a bit of the RAW lifestyle without having to fully prepare daily meals.

Thank you everyone! I can't even come close to expressing how much you all have helped us through this fantastic process. This forum and you all are just amazing!

It's funny. Congrats on finding food...
In Japan I can't seem to find any 5 or 6 star dry foods. It's all seems to be Science Diet, Eukanuba, IASM and Royal Canin,..
But I just managed to order Evo Red meat and Orijen Fish off the net!!
    It arrives today!
Thanks Lj for all the help!
