The offical L.I.N.K. thread, Long Island Nihon Ken

edited March 2009 in General
Hey all you lawnguy landers, I was looking online and noticed there's a NYC shiba meet up, but nothing going on the island. I'd like to start a meetup out here, we have plenty of dog runs out here. If any one is interested check in and we'll try to get something together. I was thinking sometime in the summer since it would be nice out, and hopefully we'll have a shiba by then.

I as actually thinking of doing that as well, since it is not always easy to go to the city/brooklyn/white plains. The problem is, there's no way of telling how many shiba owners there are on Long island, and how many of them are actually interested in meeting up. I know that there are at least 4 other shibas that visit Blydenburgh. I had tried to talk to Kathi (Bali Hai Shibas) about this some time ago, which was also an idea that struck her mind awhile back.

If we can figure out a game plan, who knows what could happen...If we have problems with finding shiba people, we can expand it to Nihon Ken people as in most of the dog parks big and little are split so no one with a shiba can worry about an akita chewing on their pups.

Yeah, my desire for an LI based meet up comes from the fact that I don't like to go into the city for anything that isn't in MSG. or the museum of natural history. Kathi would probably know the most shiba owners on the island, the lucky ones got their dogs from her. I think probably three shibas could take an akita.

I was talking more along the ease of mind of the owner, some people can get very touchy if another dog is too big or too active, in their opinions, for their dogs.

I was thinking of posting up ads on places such as craigslist(which btw, someone is getting rid of their 1.5yr female red shiba as we speak) and actually starting the meet up on meetup.com and maybe make it where it can be both Nassau and Suffolk. I've been keeping it at the corner of my mind for a while, been in the process of setting up a meet up group account at meetup.com but was unsure until a plan/ad camaign was made out...what do you think, should I start prepping it, and we can work on advertising and seeing what happens?

PS-I would be careful when taking a pups that is too young to the dog park though, as you don't know what germs there are there. If your pups is born tomorrow, than the soonest you would be allowed to take him, once the shots are over with, would be around July. But that isn't to say that your pups can't interact with dogs, that you know are proven to be vaccinated and parasite free, in the comfort of your own backyard.

I'd be interested, but echo Calia's point about taking your pup to a place where it could interact with all sorts of dogs before it's old enough to have had all its shots. In my case, since I frequent the Middle Island dog park, the park rules made that decision for me, as it does not allow dogs which are not spayed/neutered, plus requires the rabies vaccination of course. So Koji was over 6 months before he had any real exposure to other dogs in a setting like that.

dang, this is the third time I've written something. I keep clicking on something else before I post it.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't planning on bringing the pup till she was healthy and up to date, but it's good to know everyone has your back on this forum. If the rest of the world was like this it would be better, everyone watching out for eachother, and owning a shiba! I could still a) bring a camera to take pictures of everyone elses dogs, as well as traquilizers and crates so that I can steal them all for myself b) Buy, or manufacture a shiba sized hamster ball with it's own anti bacterial spray system.

I was joking about the 3 shibas vs an Akita thing, no my last name is not Vick. Pretty much anytime your read something I've written and go, "He can't be serious" your right. I can't be serious. If you can't laugh you might as well buy the farm.

Calia you seem like a resourceful and organized person, so I nominate you to be in charge and seeing how there's only three of us so far, me plus you is a majority, so you're unofficialy elected to an inconsequential position of power within a non exsistant organization. Craigslist and Meetup.com sound like fantastic ideas, anything you need Dawn and I to do please email us.

I have two shibas living in my co op, samurai jack a red boy, and Coco (i think) a white girl. If I run into them I'll ask them about the meetup.

Just be glad the dog wasn't on ebay.

So what shall we call it, I was thinking maybe instead of it being just for shibas, but also for any of the other nihon Ken that may be in the area. I know that there are a great many American Akita people, and some of them might want to hang out with others.

some suggestions I thought of were:

-Long Island Shiba Inu & Akita Lovers

    -Long Island Nihon Ken

    -Shibas of Long Island

    -Long Island Shiba Inu Addicts

    Any Suggestions...

I like Long Island Nihon Ken or L.I.N.K. I've always wanted to be part of an organization with a cool acronym. It makes me feel like a secret agent or something. We can make t shirts on zazzle, this is going to be soo sweet.
Dawn would like to take a more active role, she'd like to be the secretary of shibas. I'd like to be L.I.N.K.'s ambassador to the UN.

    Calia- President of L.I.N.K.
    Dawn- Secretary of Shibas
Joe- L.I.N.K. ambassador to the UN
    Kojichan- ?

This of course is dependant on whether or not you like this name.

As far as meetup.com, I checked in on it and apparently there are fees for starting a meet up group through them (ranging from $12-$20 a month depending on the plan, that's probably one of the reasons why no one has started an LI one through there yet).

I was thinking, since we don't know yet how far this will go, is to maybe start with something a little simpler, and free. We could make a yahoo group, google group, MySpace account, a mix of multiple types or something else that I'm not thinking of that might get more traffic. None of the mentioned account types has any thing in New York, that I can find, associated with shiba inus.

The type of internet group service we use shouldn't have too much affect so long as we promote and advertise. I think, we could also eventually make a website(one of those free ones that they have through yahoo/google/etc.) that can offer up info about the group, the breeds, and whatever else. This would obviously include a link to the most awesomest forum in the world.

I think a myspace page would be easy.

Facebook is also a great way to form groups where people can join (as fans) and make comments :)

Once you get a core group, you may be able to move over to meetup. You can always ask everyone to help offset costs by donating $10 - $20 to pay those fees.

I've actually been working on a couple of logo ideas, I'll post when I have put them on the compewter.

We should probably set up a meet up date, maybe sometime around mid April on a saturday, so as to have activity. Even if it were just us, it's a start. Also, agreeing on a place would be nice. I was thinking Blydenburgh as it's free to go to until memorial day, I've been there quite a bit, and they have a picnic area near the dog park section that could make a nice pre-play meet and greet.
  • edited November -1
Mid april on a saturday sounds good, hopefully we can get a few more people, otherwise it'll be a tetsu photo session. My pup, if we get her, will still be too young. But I'd definately go just to meet tetsu.
  • edited November -1
OK, why not make it April 18th, around 11 or 12 and have it last however long. I'm setting it up on the myspace account, and will post a blog giving further information as well as advertising.
  • edited November -1
I hope we can get a few dogs
  • edited November -1
The meet up will be on Saturday April 18th, at 11AM to however long anybody wants to stay. A 15 minute to half hour meet and greet shall start off, followed by play time in the dog park.

The meet up shall take place at Blydenburgh County Park, by and in the dog park section. The park is located off of Veterans Memorial Highway, across from the H. Lee Dennison Building.

Exit 57 off the LIE, and just continue north on Vets. It will be on the right side by a light.

Once you enter, just follow the signs that lead to the dog park, past the campsites.

We hope to see you there, it's going to be a lot of fun

Rain date shall be the following Saturday.

Here are a couple of designs I came up with, what do you think? I'll make it your choice if you want to pick one of these or figure out another one.

    design1

    design2 copy

I've talked to a couple of people about the group, so hopefully we can get some to join. I know there is at least one person interested, as she had posted looking for shiba playmates. Her dog is named Lucy, I had posted a pic of her on a dog park post.

    Lucy

Dawn and I like both. We could have more than one logo. Great job by the way on those. I think the bottom one would make an awesome t shirt.
Yeah hopefully we can get a decent amount of people. I invited my wife's cousin and one of our neighbors. Her cousin has a bulldog, and our neighbor has a boxer but I figure the more the merrier. The boxer has experience with shibas, and is a good dog. This way we have a few dogs in the beginning. If we get bigger we can be more exclusive. I still haven't run into the red boy, Samurai Jack, who lives a few building over but when I do we'll invite him. So far I think we're off to a good start.
Lucy's cute, have her owner join up online.

I'm going to go ahead and post the images on the accounts...I think the Sakura one would fit better as an account image, as it is a bit "simpler". That and it goes better with the backgrounds you have chosen.
  • edited November -1
You could make that the backround, or redesign the whole page if you want. I kind of made it hard to read.

I'm going to set up another meet up date for the beginning of May, this time it's going to be a walk instead of play in the dog park. The place will be this really nice area called Avalon. It's filled with trails that go through woods and fields, as well as has a couple of duck ponds and is not too far away from a nice small beach by the ocean.

I'll work on it after I get out of work today, just wanted to see what you thought. Even if we don't have anyone by then, it is still a nice place to visit and walk around.

We just posted our meetup on the NYC Shiba Inu group on meetup.com. Any greater New York shiba owners should check into this meetup.com group.
  • edited November -1
Yeah, today is the first meet up for L.I.N.K., and I can't wait to go. From the looks of it, there shall hopefully be at least 13 shibas coming and maybe a few Akita people. Got the camera charge and ready, can't wait.
  • edited November -1
we were charging our camera too. I wish we could bring Katsu but don't want to chance it since she isn't done with her shots. there's always next time though. We can't wait to meet Tetsu.
  • edited November -1
That's true, sad I can't see her but it would just be pure torture for her, seeing all those dogs having fun and not being able to join in. Well I'll be counting down the days till she can make her debut in public, until then I'll have to live off the spam.

Can't wait to meet you guys in person, and see who we have coming.
  • edited November -1
OK, now's the time to plan the next meet up. Was hoping to do a walk through Avalon, but they are adjusting the rules and we can't really walk around as a group with dogs. So, what do you think, shall it be another dog park meet up, or shall we try a walk around a park meet up?

If dog park, do you think we should have it at the same dog park, or try a different one? West Hills dog park is closer to Naussau, so we may be able to bring in a different crowd.
