This is the next nihonken breed for us to all freak out about.

That is some humorous translation right there.
There are some posts on here with a lot of pictures of them. They are apparently not a living monument of Japan, but they are so hailed in Nagano prefecture. Look s like their sizes ranges to smaller than Shiba Inu.
Other pics I have seen of them depict a very long, warm, luxorious coat, In these pics they look thicker than other Nihonken but not nearly as thick and long.

My husband is strong and mentally alert and faithful. また、番犬にも向いています。 The dog is also good.

I thought that was humorous as well, Katie. For a second there....
So which dog is it?
Well, interesting...natural monument of Nagano prefecture only.

They seem to have longer fur, generally, than the pets.yahoo.jp dog, but shorter than the fuzzy guys, except for the last photo in the article above in which they are very long -furred.
My Japanese friend is adamant in her opinion that the dog in the pets.yahoo.jp page is a dead ringer for her beloved childhood dog, although she had never heard of a kawakami Inu before.
just for fun, a youtube search for kawakamis http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=%E5%B7%9D%E4%B8%8A%E7%8A%AC&aq=f

Apparently the breed was thought extinct after the war, but was revived with great effort after a few were identified in remote rural areas. Some dogs of other breeds were used to offset the dangers of inbreeding from the few surviving Kawakamis.*
