My new favorite dog food specialty store carries Himalayan Dog Chews! Ive been wanting to order them online but I'd rather pick things up in person if possible.
Review: Toki likes it! He isn't much a chewer anymore but he took to it well, chewing it for about 10 minutes. He naturally is very soft mouthed, so I'm wondering if it was too hard for him. It smells like clothing after a bonfire night. I think it'll be a thing he will keep coming back to, though I think he still likes bully sticks better, maybe they're softer, and maybe he loves meat. Toki is a man's man of dogs, he likes meat.
Rina, that's cool that you go to Powwows! I haven't been to one in.....well, too long! and there's a really big one there in the spring, the Gathering of Nations (so big that I don't go! ha!)
My dogs like the split antlers, but aren't so interested in the whole antlers, I guess because they don't smell as tasty. They like the himalyan chews, but they go fast. I also got them those sweet potato chews once and they didn't last long, but I still liked because they were relatively cheap, didn't smell bad (even the "non smelly" bully sticks have an odor), and I didn't worry about them eating them. Oskar the Akita ate his in about 10 minutes, but Leo had his for a good 1/2 hour or so.
The trachea are like snacks--gone in 2 minutes!
I used to give them marrow bones, and do on occasion still, but it has to be when they can be outside because I hate the smell.
Leo is still teething, so he needs some chews for sure. Maybe I better check out bestbully.com!
My dogs definitely like split antlers better. They like the softer inner marrow (I think it's still called marrow when it's in an antler...). I just got my antlers from a local hunter, though, and sawed them up myself. He was selling 4 whole antlers for $7 or something, which cuts up into 15 large chews.
I don't get the odour-free bully sticks because I figure the smell is half the fun for the dogs. I don't mind it too much, either. They pretty much only get them in their crates when we leave them alone, anyway. I recently ordered a 100 pack from bestbullsticks.com. It was on sale anyway, then I used the 15% off code from the newsletter and I got it down to something like $0.75/stick for the 6" medium thickness.
I also have the Himalayan chews. They are pricey, but they last a long, long time. I figure if you're calculating cost over time spent chewing, they end up being a good deal. I also got those on sale from bestbullysticks.com. They had jumbo packs for half price or something a while back.
I'm super sensitive to smells, and meat type smells in particular often make me nauseous (well, unless it is a steak grilling for me!), so I just can't stand it, esp. since Leo's crate is right next to my side of the bed, and he gets a chewy when he goes to bed.
Two of my dogs have broken/flaked teeth on antlers ($550 fix for one dog) and one on a beef rib (a real meaty one too!) so I don't give either of those anymore. Only softer poultry bones, bully sticks, and other edible chews that aren't made out of a million things that sound like plastics. I gave a Himalayan chew once and really liked it, not the smell so much, but the dog thought it was awesome. When it got too small I popped it into the microwave and made a cheezepuff out of it.
Ok, I finally succumbed to the Bestbullysticks.com madness. It was hard to limit my choices, because my god, they had everything! I ended up ordering a bunch of the the smaller bully sticks (both Oskar and Leo are pretty mellow chewers, so they regularly get the 6 inch bully sticks which last a long time for them. And the Shibas are strong chewers, but they just eat theirs more quickly!)
But I also got some chicken feet (was torn between those, the rabbit ears and the duck's feet but when with the chicken feet) and some little tiny fish snacks that all of them like. (Less salty than the dried anchovies I get at that Asian market).
Saya loves dehydrated duck feet.. I'm not into getting cooked bones for dogs to chew on, but they're pretty soft haven't had an issue yet..
Saya gets raw chicken feet so I only get the dehydrated if I ran out in winter as the farmer who sells them doesn't operate during winter that's her break time. hehe
Saya loves beef tendons, trachea, andbully sticks she also loves these salmon skin chews.
I got those salmon skins once, too, but they went too fast! I used the tiny little fish (sometimes I buy cat treats) for training treats to mix things up a bit.
I thought Saya had the duck feet before. It inspired me to try them--well, the chicken feet, rather!
Bestbullysticks has fast shipping.....I got a shipping notice yesterday, and I only ordered Sunday night. Soon we will have chicken feet! (And bully sticks!)
I get the bully tips/scraps for the pups, they love it!!! Plus, it is cheaper because it's like the leftover pieces. The older dogs dont like it, i guess its hard to chew because there is nothing for them to hold on to.
So have other people got the odor free bully sticks before? Because I think they sent me the wrong ones. These are supposedly odor free (what I ordered) but they have a very strong odor, and the dogs could smell them while they were still in the box. And even now, that I have them in the box in the closet, they are scratching at the closet door. This does not seem to be "odor free" to me.
Pain, too, because it will be annoying to have send these back and get the right thing, but I didn't get what I paid for.
@shibamistress--BBS has really good customer service. If you call and complain, they will send you new ones (for free). I have order odor free ones before but not from BBS but they still have a faint odor. Anyhow, I would still call and complain.
Good to know. I'm going to, because these have more odor than the regular (non odor free) ones I buy locally. I actually did try and call today, but they close at 5 EST, and I hadn't even gotten the package by then!
