What's the Matter With Tosca?

edited April 2009 in Behavior & Training
Something's bothering my Tosca this evening.

I spent the day at home just laying around and hanging around with her. I went to the gym this evening with my friend in the evening and when I got back my mother, who was quite annoyed, told me that she finally had to put the dog out because she was whining and making her little shiba noises and my parents couldn't figure out what the problem was. It had started to rain so she was screaching and was brought in very quickly. She was quiet for a little while and then she randomly ran into the middle of my parents living room a yodeled. I was trying to make a sample of my newest culinary experiment to see if I wanted to make it for Easter dessert and Tosca was seriously under foot which is not normal for her. After we went back down to the apartment, she seemed uneasy and was shaking for a while. I picked her up and held her on my lap and the shaking stopped. Then I went and got her rawhide chew bone out of the pantry and she's currently busy with that.

I don't know what her issue is/was and I thought that some of you more knowledgable people may have some insight. She ate. We went on our walks. we spent plenty of time together. I don't get it.

Sounds like something was bothering her - a noise, barometric pressure, you weren't there - it'll be tough to figure it out, IMO

It sounds to me like she has a syndrome that is specific to this one breed of dog. It's called Shibasicus Crazyiascus. Nobody knows for sure what the cause or the cure is. I've tried frantic vet trips in the past to no avail. The current leading theory by scholars in the area is that laughing it off is the best medicine. YMMV.

this has happened before except she was barking. usually shes pretty alert and lets out a bark but this time she went on for like 10 minutes. never really found out what the problem was.

Sophie was once like this when the usual wind direction changed and the rain dripped loud against the window... but you said the rain began later on... perhaps it really was the barometic pressure or something you couldnt hear...

or this shiba thing...but perhaps this shibathing is a noise we cant here... damn i just slightly overflight Daves post and took him serious for a second :)

presenting a chewbone when shes like this is perhaps a good think to make a respondent conditioning out of this... so that in the end if she hears that sound (for example, assuming that it is a noise) shes happy cause she links it with a yummy bone... but you have to present the bone at the beginning...and dont pity her to much because this could make her fear stronger the next time, sit down on the couch and do something calm, when she jumps on pet her but dont react to much to her...you have to show her that there is nothing around which is worth to mention :)
