Gentle Leader Fitting

edited April 2009 in General
Anyone have any luck fitting the Gentle Leader? I'm trying to put it on Sasuke but he seems to be able to slip the muzzle part EVERY SINGLE TIME! Our behavioralist really wants Sasuke to be on the harness so I can control him better. I just cannot get the right setting.

Sasuke is too big for a small, but he is swimming in his medium :(

The neck strap for the gentle leader is what determines how easily the nose strap can slip off. To test the slipability, but the gentle leader on Sasuke and try to slip the nose strap off his nose. If it comes off, take the gentle leader off and tighten the neck strap. Repeat this process until you can't slide the nose strap off. Sometimes with the Gentle leader, the neck strap will seem tight enough where it gives the illusion of being too tight for the dog, but so long as the neck strap is at the base of the head it should be fine.

These are basically the instructions talked about in the dvd that comes with the gentle leader packet. I haven't had issues with the fitting, but we switched to the Halti as the nose strapped seems too close to the eyes.

I see that problem with the Gentle Leader too. My behavioralist made me watch the movie, read the manual, and call her with any questions including hints and tips. Sasuke's puppy training trainer has adjusted the Gentle Leader as well and he somehow seems to get it to come off. We are also concerned that the medium is too long of a "leash" for him and he might chew it. Our trainer also was there when we bought it.

I think I'm going to look at the Halti to see if it's a better fit for him.

I know the easy walk harness comes in "tweener" sizes. Does the gentle leader come in those sizes too? If so, you can have your local pet shop order it for you or you can order it yourself.

I know Kristin just ordered tween sizes for the easy walk off Ebay.

I also prefer the Halti as the nose strap actually stays on the nose.

I would echo what others are saying here. I actually prefer the "Snoot Loop". It has adjustable cheek pieces that permit a better fit and keep the nose loop out of the eyes.

They will even customize one for you if necessary.

I also always use a two leash method when using a head halter. I have a sturdy martingale or flat collar on the dog along with the halter and they each have a separate leash attached. I like this for a couple of reasons:
-If something really excites the dog, the risk to neck injury is diminished since they will hit the flat collar first.
-If the dog manages to wriggle out of the halter, I still have control.
-I can better keep the dog at my side where the halter is most effective.
-I can cue with the flat collar first and only use the halter as backup. One of the main complaints about halters is that they do not "translate" well to other equipment, and I can increase the probability of eventually weaning off a halter if I use both together.

Beebe rubbed her face so much with the gentle leader trying to get it off, she gave herself scleritis. I'm disappointed that was one battle I couldn't win with her.
