Glad to hear he is feeling better (and loving his new food)!!!

Ask your vet if low sodium V8 juice might be a good idea for Koda's diet. It has tomato juice and juices from carrots, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress, and spinach.

I give my Shiba V8 juice on extremely hot days to help balance her electrolytes. I discovered that she liked it a couple of years ago when I accidentally turned over a glass of V8 juice. Since then, I've learned that lots of dogs like tomato juice.
  • Go Koda! I hope his iron levels go back up to normal, and that he feels better.

Do you think maybe it has to do with the lack of spam you've posted. I've heard that certain flash bulbs in cameras actually cause a dog's body to produce more iron ;)

Koda's doing great. Thanks again everyone. His new diet seems to fit him well. No stomache problems what so ever and he was a pretty hyper/happy pup today. He was really really silly. It was cracking me up.

Ok ok ok. These are just for you Joe! You asked for it you got it!

Koda's Lazy Sit night before the big day.

If you really want to know. Because of Koda's anemia, they performed a laser neuter on him so he wouldn't lose much blood. The vet said only a few drops. All they did was laser a small incision, tie off the tubes, and remove only his testicles. The sacking is still in there. He looks like he has deflated balls. His hair will probably grow back to cover them mostly.

thats the same exact thing they did to Sevuk, everyone thinks he's not fixed while he is. Since he was older (around 6 years) when we got it done the vet decided to go with something alittle easier than the full surgery so that it would be easier on Sevuk to recover.

It's been great on recovery, and the appearance of testicles makes me feel a little better. To tell everyone the truth I almost didn't go threw with it. My comfort is that I'm sure that his full siblings will be bred. It would really affect me if I thought that more people couldn't be blessed with such a well rounded Kai. His tempermant is everything a Kai owner could wish for.

    What? No dish :p

    cutie <3 ~
  • That's pretty amazing. Ihad no idea they had anything like that.

    Deflated balls lol!

Sorry it's a cell phone pic, but it's so Koda I had to share. He's such a sensitive little boy.

    ADORABLE!

So good to hear his diet is working well and he is recovering fast. The forum seems to have a curse with neuters going bad... glad his went well.

Koda is too cute. I love that last pic of him, I think he matured a lot faster than Kona. Kona looked like a goofy puppy until like 1.5 years.

The "Pre-op porn" pic, does he sleep like that often? Kona does, it's really funny. We call it his "airing it out" sleeping pose. LOL

The white on his chest has gotten smaller too. Kona started with a little white mark and now just has 3 white hairs.

Glad it went ok. He can always have a scrotumectomy down the road :)

    Thanks. He's my cutie pie.

Lindsay that's funny. I was talking to someone about that today.

Brad I'm glad no one told me about the forum curse until now. He's doing really well on his diet and he's wanting to eat more this past week. It's a good sign that his iron levels are going up.

He sleeps like that all the time. It's really funny. I used to call it airing his ballz out, but now I guess I can't. lol.

Koda grew up fast. His ears went up by 10 weeks, before his brother's did. Koda has never acted like a puppy. He's mature for his age. It's like he was born a two year old dog. It's good in a sense, but then I want him to always be my little puppy and at 40 pds. he really isn't anymore. I think he's pretty much full size. Almost the same as his dad.

I think his white spots are the same size, he has just grown and they are less apparent than when he was smaller. I like them though. They mark the places he likes getting scratched the most. :p

FYI to readers- dog castrations don't involve "scrotum-ectomies". The testicles are pushed cranially (towards the head) and then an incision is made over the top of them. The testicles are exteriorized one at a time and the tunic covering them is typically left intact. The spermatic cords and vasculature are clamped and ligated and the testicles then can be cut away. There are sutures but often times they are buried using absorbable suture and will dissolve on their own.

The laser cauterizes as it cuts, so there is less bleeding but the procedure itself is the same. The full appearance of the scrotum post-op is typically due to swelling and it will subside. Many dogs that are neutered at young ages don't have large testicles, so their scrotums remain small and are barely perceptible. Dogs neutered after maturity may have a bit of an "empty sack".

Surgical site looks great! Just keep him from licking. Wishing Koda a speedy recovery.

His little face!!! I wanna give him a hug.

He's gotten so big. And handsome.
  • edited November -1
He sure is a handsome fella. :)

Glad to hear Koda is on the mend, he seems to get more distinguished looking the more I see pictures of him! I used to think the akita was the prouder looking of the Japanese Breeds but from your spam I'm beginning to think it's the kai! He is so, so handsome :)

Tara - Just wanted to let you know that Koda will probably not require a scrotumectomy. Jack had fairly prominent male-bits before his neutering, and since we weren't able to get it done until he was 9-10 months old, we were worried his empty sack would be just as visible. Not so!

Here's a picture of him in December, pre-neuter:

    HPIM0612

    And post-neuter, this June:

    IMG00026

Picture quality isn't the best, but it's enough to see how much of his scrotum is visible now... most of the time it looks flat, due to that angle you can see it a bit.
  • edited November -1
lol someone asked me if i put neuticles in. i had to google it.
  • edited November -1
Scrotumectomies are occasionally apart of neutering procedures depending on age and breed of dog to remove the excess skin that may not shrink on it's own, like with an older basset or hound. The testicles are still removed the standard way. I mention it tongue in cheek about Koda, he is so young still and swollen.
  • edited November -1
When I got both my guys done, they both still had somewhat of a 'sack'. The skin looked puckered and crinkled for the longest time and I thought that they would never shrink. Eventually the skin shrunk and is practically unnoticeable, unless you're looking for them. What's great is that with the type of coat spitz breeds have (bushy and thick), the fur will cover up the bit of skin that's left. You'll just have to deal with strangers calling him a girl.

Lindsay, it is very noticeable. You were actually mentioning a procedure that my vet and I had already possibly suggested since I went back for his blood tests on his anemia. I am hoping that it all shrinks up, but it really hasn't. He said he would do the procedure gratis so we will see.

Beth, I'm waiting to see if his fur covers it. he he. That is the good thing about longer haired dogs.
  • edited November -1
I think what actually makes it look bigger and more noticeable than any other neuter is the fact that the whole area is shaved. When my boys were done, only the shaft and a little of the belly was shaved. The scrotum and thighs were still covered with fur.
  • edited November -1
They did go a little shave crazy for a laser neuter! I was like :O he he

Koda is a beast! I emailed Koda's bro's owner earlier today to see how he was doing and Koda's brother is only around 25-27 pds. Koda is 40 pounds and 21 inches tall at 5 months old. =o

He's not fat at all. Koda gets a couple of hours of exercise a day, but he's huge! I have a mutant Kai.....he he. I need to email and see where his sisters are at.
  • edited November -1
    Awww...Not a mutant: King Kai!
