Ninja & Portia Dog Beach Spam!

edited May 2009 in General
Last weekend I went to the Dog Beach with my neighbor and his minpin mix - I was a little hesitant, but why pass up an oppurtunity to socialize and do some training.

....IT WENT GREAT!!! I am so proud of my little man! His hackles were up for quite a while, but he was letting dogs sniff and he was sniffing them. I was hesitant because I thought Ninja might show some guarding behavior around me, but he was totally fine. - Except for the occasional growl - in which I was able to step in and back the other dog away or call Ninja over to me. He has awesome recall! It's funny, now I just have to call Ninja's name, and Portia comes running too, haha!

It kind of sucked though, in Tustin, it was nice and sunny, but when we got to the huntington beach it was overcast and cold!

Here are some pics and a video - enjoy!

Here is the video I took:

And...I saw this dog...looks like a wolf hybrid? It looked HUGE compared to the Golden it was playing with...

I also saw a KAI KEN!!! I was shocked! When we were packing up the car, the car across from us had a Kai Ken! I just yelled "IS THAT A KAI KEN!?" and she was like "YES!!!" She was all packed up and leaving already, so couldn't really talk to her about it, but her Kai was beautiful!

Awesome pics! Looks like it was a great time, even if the weather wasn't spectacular. Typical slobbery boxer, huh? I can't imagine the shibas tolerating a mouthful of sand like that.

The "kids" look great! I'm envious of the dog beach!

ha ha ha that look Ninja gave your friend when he wanted him to fetch. Shiba priceless. lol That look of acknowledgement and then ignore.

That video is great!!! I honestly don't think I couldn't get Keiko to come back if she was off leash (maybe I'm too paranoid)... but I KNOW the Loki would be at my feet the second he was called.

I wonder how my girls would do with the ocean... hmm. :)

    WOW! A Kai? That's awesome!

Ninja looks super happy in his first few pics - and he looks great in the video, just a bit aroused, nothing bad. It's amazing how far he has come - yet another reason you should pursue that training gig! :o)

That wolfish dog does look very wolfy for sure!

Great video and pictures! Funny that both dogs have a white tuft on the back of their necks... during the video I thought you had something tucked under their collars. I was going to ask what it was, and then looked at the photos and saw it was natural. Very cute!

Yeah, I think we're going to go back to the beach this wednesday. It was fun! I am very proud of my little guy~ He has made awesome progress! I guess thats what 9+ months of consistent training and socialization will do! WELL WORTH IT!

McYogi - Portia doesn't usually slobber. Only when we are doing training, she drools for treats and when shes running and playing like crazy...she seems to slobber on other dogs a lot.

    tjbart17 - isn't that funny? Ninja is such a snob :P

Evan - Dog beaches are a little scary...because there is no fencing and it isn't enclosed. But the one we go to, there is a ramp you have to walk down to get to the beach...so the street/parking is elevated from the beach. Still not the safest, since dogs can easily run up the ramp or climb their way up the rocks, but we walk about a mile down the beach away from the ramp so that it will be unlikely for our dogs to run back up to street level. You could also always keep your dog on-leash until you get a safe distance away, and leash them before you head back too.

Brad - I know! A Kai Ken! It's head was sticking out the window and I was like..."no...it can't be...but it looks like one so much...I have to ask!"

Mylo - Yeah, they have almost the same markings! That's usually the first thing people notice about them. They're meant to be together :)
