Good ol peroxide works wonders for abscesses along with warm compresses! The smell usually is the worst part but the peroxide is amazing at purging the infection. So glad you were able to get everything cleaned up and flowing. The vet stays just add so much more unneeded stress to the situation and cost. The skin should retract some once things heal up more. It did for the cats, dogs and livestock we have treated for the same.
Yeah! Sounds like a messy ordeal, but it will heal up soon enough. I have dealt with hematomas and abcesses and neither are pretty, but eventually they heal up fine!
I got some scissor tweezers from the pharmacy, which they seemed the most similar to mosquito clamps. Caring for Rakka's drain is a breeze now, the only trouble is that the tube has started to come out and it shouldn't be producing so much fluid still. Well, back to the vet... *sigh*
Rakka pulled her drain all the way out, so we headed back to the vet. They didn't want to put a new one in because the fluid production seems to have slowed. I guess this is called seroma - fluid build up after surgery, which is particularly common after lumpectomies. The vet reassured me that they're pretty harmless and usually just get reabsorbed on their own, but they do need to be drained if they get too big. She's been back twice to have it drained. They just poke a little hole and let it drain out. She's been an absolute angel for them lately, so that's good. Maybe she realised that resistence was futile.
Also, Rakka's stitches are out, so with the stitches and drain gone, she's free to run and play again! She's relieved by that, and so am I. I think the worst of it is over. Whew!
