Did you learn a lot while at Akashima Kennel?
Kimi/Mura look SO thin! Is this a female shikoku trait? I can really only compare them to pics of females I see on the forum, so I have no idea.
How big are their kennels? How much time do they spend there daily?
Do they get much dog-dog, or human interaction daily? They look well groomed!
Thanks, Kris!
My female shiba (2yrs this month) is a very picky eater and is quite thin compared to my 2.5y/o male who is at a healthy, filled out proportion for his size.
As most of the nihon ken spitz types tend to fill out at 2+ years, I am used to seeing healthfully proportioned dogs, not overly skinny or fat ones.
Back on the shikoku size, is it more common for shikoku to be thin until a certain age when they fill out? Or are they based on activity, eating habits, etc., rather than age/gender?
I tend to keep my dogs on the "lean" side. Funny thing cause our Shikoku here in North America are considered "fat" for Japan, lol. If you go to Japan and see Shikoku there in person, they are less then lean. The area that you are looking at which makes them look super thin will "bloat" up after they drink water and/or eat. Then it'll look "fat". That's just how it is. The Shikoku in Japan are skinny because you can normally SEE their ribs.
I think Yoshi is the only Shikoku I've seen that looks massive in size, it was only through a photo though. I never met the dog in person. Very cute dog though, I wish the owner would post some updates on the forums.
Why didnt you tell me that early Kyle!!
And now to Jens other questions:
The dogs live in these kennel the whole day and night, which are aprox. 1,5m x 2,5 - 3m (Im not so good at estimating so forgive me if its not totally correct). I think the kennel wouldnt be a problem if the dogs would get enough exercise, but one person against 14 dogs, thats a long way to equal measures. The dogs have contact with Katja during, feeding, cleaning the kennel, medication, dog hygiene stuff, exhibitions, nursing the puppies and perhaps some playsessions or field trips. But with 14 dogs no one gets enough. I really tried hard during my time there but I was only able to work with 4-6 dogs a day and had to concentrate on some dogs cause of Katjas training wishes. I took those dogs outside which needed it most but I was very unhappy with the situation. This was the only negative thing of my stay
ok I have to work again!

She puts the dogs in the big play pens in pairs. Shiba with Shiba and Shikoku with Shikoku.
I think now it's in groups of 3 with some dogs...maybe 4? I remember her rotating them throughout the day.
Lisa - Wasn't George there? Or was he working most of the time?
Goerge was only there for lets say a week cause he had to work, but when he came back we did the great trip to the north west of the Island and it was great fun!! Hes really a funny and cordial man and together with Katja I soon felt like beeing with family
