Sushi for dogs?

edited June 2009 in General
The hubby decided to give sushi a try. lol He HATES it! hahahah So we were thinking of giving it to the pups. It's just a strip of Salmon on a mound of rice. Nothing else. No seasons or sauce or wrap...........Think it would be ok? I dont want to just toss it, but I dont want to upset the pups' tummies either.

They put vinegar in sushi rice. Last time we gave Katsu sashimi she got a little bit of an upset stomach. We gave her just the salmon but it had come from a piece of sushi, so I think it had some vinegar on it.

I just did a google search and a lot of pages came up saying that raw Salmon was a big no no for dogs???? I had never heard this before. I haven't given it to her yet.......I'll wait till I get more responses.

Did it say why raw Salmon was bad for dogs? The only thing I could think of why (as apposed to the usual reasons to not feeding your dog raw foods) is on how the Salmon is raised. Farm raised salmon has a lot of bad things in it (can't remember what at the moment) so it is best not to eat it. Wild caught is so much better, and tastes better too, but there's no knowing where the Sushi places get their fish.

I gave my boys a piece of sushi for Tetsu's b-day, and they seemed to handle it alright. I'd just be careful at what place you get it from, as not all sushi bars properly care for their meat.

Did you give Tetsu the sushi rice as well? Or just the fish?

    we feed raw salmon heads...

if you are nervous to feed it raw, just throw it in a frying pan with some water for like 5 minutes. all good, vinegar mostly out, dogs will love it. I wouldn't give the white enriched vinegared rice though.

We gave him the rice as it can help bind loose stool, figure it would partially counteract any possible upset. Also gave them some pot roast.

And I think that article more pertains to fish straight from the river. Raw meat, if properly stored and cared for, can be free of parasites and germs. My mom often times makes a bloody stake, slightly browning the outside. She usually deep freezes it for a good month or two before doing this.

That was what we gave Katsu. It was a few weeks ago and she's alright.

We called it "salmon poisoning" when I worked for a vet franchise in Oregon years ago. It's very common on the West coast, but I don't know about other places with out access to streams and rivers. It's from consumming raw trout and other stream fish and animals. This parasitical fluke is host to a rickettsia parasite that the dogs ingest, causing massive fever and dehydration, most of them died without treatment and those that were treated were still incredibly ill. It always coincided with the good fishing weather and salmon runs here.

Personally...I'd give it a quick cook-through just to be on the safe side, or give it a good freezing...Sushi Ice Lolly ;) ~
