I don't like the boys on the couch, but while i'm at work my fiance is always letting them up there so i can't stop the behavior when i get home because he allows it
I love when my dogs are in bed with me...they are the best cuddlers ever!!!
but my dogs have never showed dominate behavior while on the couch they just don't like to share it with certain people.....like my little bro he came to visit and slepted on the couch while my mom slept in the guest room, and Niko kepted pushing him off haha....he ended up sleeping on the floor....then Niko went down there to sleep with him haha
We allow our 2 on the living room furniture with the caveat that when we tell them down they do it, else lose furniture privileges. (We’ll often get them down if they are extra stinky or wet from a rain walk.)
We allow dogs on furniture for sleeping. However, not until the dogs are older. I don't like dogs banking off the couch or wrestling in play on the furniture or digging. Until pups have learned to be polite they are not allowed the privilege. Also the banking and flying off the couches etc can cause problems for legs and tendons if the dogs are not mature and or they land on hard surfaces such as tile. Last thing I want is damage that requires surgery. You would be surprised how many dogs actually are injured by banking off living room surfaces each year.
at first i tried pretty hard to not let her on beds. however since i dont crate her anymore she just goes on to my bed when i go out. also when i goto bed, i dont allow her to jump on my bed, but in the mornings she almost always sleeping by my foot. after a few months of this i just decided to let her to do it.
I don't want Mylo on my bed at all. There just isn't enough space on the bed for the three of us, and I didn't want Mylo to start resenting my boyfriend (before we lived together). I found that if I closed my bedroom door when I was gone, keeping him out, he stopped trying after about a week (when I left the door open again). He used to be a ninja and jump up and sleep on the bed while I was out, and then jump off when he heard my key in the door. It made it impossible to correct him, because although I knew he was on there, I could never be sly or fast enough to catch him. Closing the door worked for some reason. He hasn't tried since.
I'm about to try the blanket-on-the-couch idea... I'll give updates later haha.
Here's to hoping I don't create a couch-hog. Otherwise, it's back on his own beds. lol
In my floor of the house, Tosca is allowed on my bed (except on the nights she gets her tick meds) and all the living room furniture and on my bed. On the second floor, she can't go on the furniture and she isn't allowed on the third floor because my parents don't want fur all over their bed. Tosca will move off the furniture when I tell her to and has no issues with possessiveness.
It's funny, but I actually find it difficult to sleep without a shiba on my bed now.
* Move off the furniture. I think faster than I type. She actually will move furniture... if there's a treat or something else interesting under it.
I didn't have any rules on furniture except that no one is allowed to use it as a scratching post (cats) or chew toy (dogs).
I don't like anyone on the bed when they're dirty, but if they're clean it's fine. However, when given the choice...while the cats love to sometimes curl up on the bed...the dogs actually prefer sleeping on the floor, lol.
It's the weirdest thing but then again...my dogs aren't cuddlers. I tried to get Lynx to sleep on the bed with me once, that lasted for about 30 minutes and then she relocated to the floor (at home). When we're out traveling and staying in motels/hotels or at friend's houses...I sometimes wake up with her sleeping beside me. And other times I find Lynx on the floor, in a chair or in her crate. Shoushuu sometimes likes to relax on the bed when he's awake and sometimes for an afternoon nap. Kotomi doesn't sleep -grins- so she bounces around everywhere!
So at night, I normally keep my dogs outside or inside in crates...at least for the time-being.
Now, for some reason ALL the dogs will jump up ON TOP of the dinning table (new thing). Which is so not cool! They'll get off when I tell them "off", however, still...I need to teach them that is a "no no" place. Silly dogs.
When I move again into another place, I'm probably not gonna allow them on the furniture. Especially if it's nice furniture...like the couchs that I plan on stealing from my dad, lol (he has too many couches). Or I might just put one of those fashionable covers on, don't know...we'll see. It really sucks to teach them as puppies that "it's okay" and then tell them as adults that "it's not okay anymore, change of rules" -grins-. Depending on where I move to (house style), maybe I can have a special "doggie den" with furniture they will be allowed on. I plan to have all sorts of cat tree scratching posts & cat walks around the house for the felines.
I don't have any "dominance" issues with any of my dogs. Other people *might* have problems with Lynx & Shoushuu, depends on if they know the person or if it's a stranger, but NOT me -smiles-!
So I've totally managed to do it! Mylo is only allowed on my couch (not the leather one my boyfriend bought) when I put his blanket there, and only when I call him up. I think sometimes he can read my mind because it was almost too easy to train. I think one of the key things I did was, whenever he was on the couch with me and I got up, I would say "Ok Mylo, off" in a positive tone. He would always hop off and then lay on the floor. Now, when I get off the couch, he hops off automatically. It's pretty cool!!! Oh, and now we cuddle on the couch after I get home from work around noon. It's really cool, and I feel like it's kind of bonding us better. He's still not a huge cuddler... but it's better than the nothing we had before. His max cuddle time was about an hour (I fell asleep and I think he did too). Pretty good for a Shiba!
The kitties and Keigo are allowed on the bed (my husband's doing), but I have a cover for Keigo to keep the hair off the sheets. That's where my tolerance ends. The kitties climb onto the dining room table and chairs, which boils my blood! All I have to do is look and them and they very carefully scurry off. God forbid I come home to find a cat sitting on a chair. I have a sheet on the couch for the kitties and my husband (he spills and is dirty, LOL). Keigo used to have a blanket for the couch, but that was only during his recovery from surgery. He's no longer allowed on the couch.
Obviously, my objection has nothing to do with dominance.
My mom just moved into a new apartment and bought a fancy leather couch. She also got a blanket to put on the couch so Katsu can jump up and hang out when we visit. I guess one by product of us letting Katsu on the couch is that she now think's all couches are hers.
