Shikoku books

Can anyone recommend some good general books about Shikoku as a breed (in English)? Most dogapedias only give them a brief mention, and even some of the ones about Japanese breeds seem to give them short shrift.

I don't think there is any books completely on Shikoku. They're mentioned in dog breed books, but they really don't tell all that much about them. :( Probably better off doing all research online about them.

Does anyone know of any Shikoku breeders in the US? I am just curious, I tried to look around when someone said one may compliment Koda more since it's bigger and I was interested.

I have this book: Japanese Dogs: Akita, Shiba, and Other Breeds

It's great, tho it's now out of print. That's the closest thing to a Shikoku book your gonna find.

Keep in mind there are probably less than 500 of these dogs in the world, easily under 100 in the US. So, there's not really a huge market for a Shikoku book.

As for breeders there are only 2 in North America. Akashima (in CAN) and O'Ikon (in Ohio).

Only current U.S. Shikoku breeder I know of is Peggy of O'ikon Nihonken. There are a few upcoming ones I know of, one being Yamabushi Kennel, and north of the U.S. (Akashima Kennel in Vancouver, B.C., Canada).

If there is ever a book about the Shikoku Inu in English, the author will be from this forum.

And then when it gets published the entire country of Japan will all, in unison, go, "hhhHEEEEEEHHHHH????"

Yup, we'll let you know when we publish it -wink-.

Brad, I have seen that book costing upwards of $150 US. I wish it wasn't considered rare as well, like the breeds it describes.

Maybe we can contact the publisher and see if they can re-print that book, as I really wold like to have a copy myself, if enough people are interested it could mean a lot of money for them.

It kinda ticks me off that people take advantage of the rarity of the book. There are copies on there, but there's no way i'm paying that much money for it. I really wish I had gotten a copy when I had the chance. :(

I'm hoping the book comes back into print. It seems interest in shikoku and other nihon ken is rising. I would like it if the members of this board were able to accumulate enough information to write a book, too. That would be awesome and the proceeds could go to our forum fund.

Is there any good books about Shikoku available in Japanese? I cannot understand a word in Japanese, but maybe it would be worth organizing a translation and printing if a great book is already been written.

What about collection all info, maybe on a seperate website, looking at it carefully with all experience in the group, so there can be developed a good text with all the know how collected until today. Than bring all good quality images together and the layout can be started. If you know up front how many copies you need, than the risk is relative low, cost wise. Print can be done in Hong Kong for a very good quality but not with the chemicals normally used in Chinese print shops. I could take care about prepress and lay out. It may take a while, but why not? Abviously, other breeds can be included too. Or a series of small books, same layout and style but each breed on it's own. Like 60 or so pages each.

Are there really no books about Shikoku? I'll do a search on Amazon Japan. Or look it up in libraries.. I imagine that there's got to be more than the 2 or 3 mentioned in this thread that do.

I have a few books in English, and I have one entitled: "ニッポンの犬" that has some stuff about the Shikoku-ken (四国犬) in it. If you decide to search amazon.jp, try looking under Shikoku-ken using the kanjis.
