Moldy treats

Never feed moldy treats and make sure you open bags before you get out of the store.

Ok so I purchased a bag of Dogswell Vitality treats that I picked up real quick for Wed evening training class.

Well take a look.....

Anyone have luck with the food dryers for their own dog treats?? How is that working out??

The company when emailed did not have much to say other than "it's rare" and thanks for letting them know.

    That is freaking disgusting!

Wow. That's a first, I've never seen moldy dog treats. I dehydrate sweet potatoes for Nemo, but nothing other than that.

how "vital".... they won't exchange it for you?

Actually it is moldy chicken strips.....Was writing fast so didn't clarify everything.....yeah I took the package back to the store I purchased from, but thought the co. show know the sku and product number in case the whole batch was bad. I was told there were no other incidences. Even so, I don't think they would have told me in any case probably to avoid mass hysteria. I don't think I will be going back to that product line again anyhow .....thought I would post here so everyone is aware and opens or checks the bags if they are loyal to the brand.

OMG I just bought those for Koda. Salmon though. That is gross! I guess they are really all natural though w/out preservatives.

Yuck! We get the sweet potatoes over here. Maybe it's time to buy a dehydrator. Any recommendations?

I have one of those dehydrators from the infomercials on tv that I bought at a garage sale 9 years ago and it still works really well.

I recently found out that the Dogswell products are from China so I stopped using them.

That really sucks about the mold though, YUCK-O. Glad you are perceptive enough to know not to feed those to the furbabies!

Gross. Seriously the company should be concerned. I stopped buying these treats when their "happy hips" sweet potatoes had white and green spots on them. I called the company they said "it happens, thanks" i said "NO, what happens? Why does this happen?" then they discussed how they have super quality control at their location and things happen during shipment. From China.

I have nothing against origin, its just after the recalls (of dog food, kids toys, baby formula) enough is enough. I do not support Dogswell because of this.

This is the dehydrator that I own:

I love it - I also have the jerky gun that makes life a lot easier. I still haven't made a chicken one that I'm happy with. My next purchase will be a professional slicer so I can get consistency on the slices. I currently ground the meat and then dehydrate.

Blech! I will avoid Dogswell now.
  • edited November -1
Thanks LJ I will certainly look into that for sure. Tell me more about the jerky gun. Did you get that from the same company?

Like Jen I am annoyed at the fact the company brushed it of so lightly. My thought is, what is in there we don't see.
The pet supply place ticked me off too.... When I took the item back to the store the owner made some comment how the owner of the dogwell co lived in China at the dog plant to assure quality control. Whatever, I think that tale is probably a load of crap... Anything to try to pacify the customer. I mentioned that hopefully other customers were wise enough to not feed moldy products to their dogs.

    grumble grumble....

I'm glad you took a picture of it. You should send it to their distributor so they know you have a picture of it.

I emailed the photo(s) and info sku on the bag and supply store where the purchase was made to the contact at their customer service. They are the ones who gave the pitiful reply.

Not sure who the distributor is.

They seem to have an LA and San Fran location... but i'm sure those are offices.

This sucks, this isn't an isolated incident, as I found out when I voiced my complaint to my vet. And yet.. this company keep$ on going.

Well the charge a fortune for the stuff $18 per moldy bag.....That is equal to 3 whole chickens already roasted at Cost co etc. If i had not been in a hurry and given cash to carry by the training center I would not have wasted my time in picking the item up.

I am going to my own resources for making stuff. I can't take all the garbage.

Oh and for those of you who have dogs on eagle pack 6 that company is being bought by Wellness. I am not sure what the plans are for the formula but be aware there may be a change. Most stores have that brand on hold since distributors are changing for shipping in the product.

I did get the jerky gun from the same company. You can buy extra trays, as well as ones to make fruit leather (strawberry is my favorite). I've had this dehydrator for just over 3 years and have not had any problems - I had one previous one (different company) that I was not nearly as pleased with.

Oh my! That is really disgusting. I'm bummed because the Dogswell jerky was the only premade chicken jerky that I thought was good enough for the dogs. It is really expensive. I just bought some, too and it was about $20. It does seem sort of ridiculous actually, to think of the money spent on that over time which could be used to purchase a dehydrator. Well, I'm sad about the moldy treats and the company response.

    Jess, the dogs love those!

Anybody know of any other chicken jerky alternatives that are sort of tough to chew on like the Dogswell treats?
  • edited June 2009
I use those too and the dogs love them. I did not have any on hand (was left at the house) and the dog store was nearby to the center at the time.

We ended up making do with a bag of Barbaras cheese puff bakes fwhich was shared with the rest of the class. Someone else came up with nutter butters and that worked for the drills and allowed enough for each animal to have a half of cookie.

Rule of thumb have extra food in hand just in case.

Just wondering, does anyone else carry treatsies in their cars just in case?
  • edited November -1
I am treat challenged, I'm never prepared, so no.

I seem to have a clicker and treats on me 24/7 even when I am dogless. I tend to always have an extra leash too.

I tried carrying treats on me, but Tosca makes it her mission to find them. She's a major purse raider.

My car has a little drawer on the lower left side by the driver door. I kept cookies in there to toss to Sage when we passed a dog in the car (a dog! = good, b/c it's Cookie time!- it largely worked and he only reacts once in a while to dogs from the car now). Came in handy- I was in CT at a hockey tournament and my defenseman and I were driving from the hotel to the rink for our night game when we saw a car stopped on the side of the road. An off-duty police officer was on her way home from work and saw an injured Rottie on the road- HitByCar- The dog was limping and wary, the officer had a slip lead and it was dark. I stopped my car in the middle of the road so the cars behind me coudln't really go around. I asked her if treats would help and she said they might, so I gave her the treats in my car cookie drawer and she was able to win the rottie over and slipped the leash on and brought the poor dog to her car.

I have a few leashes in the car, dog first aid kit, bowls, lots of blankets and towels. Duct tape and flea-combs to de-tickify after outings.

Ok so we got the dryer and it works great so far we have only made fruit roll up (mango strawberry) and the dogs love that!!
We were not able to get the jerky gadget or extra trays. So we have not ventured into that yet.

LJ have you made jerky strips from beef or chicken for your dog(s)? The recipe guide states they should be cooked before making into jerky.....Have you had to do that?? Also, did you marinade the meat first?

    Snf

As far as keeping treats in the car we don't do that only because of heat and humidity. Invariably the bag of treats fall under the seats or gets misplaced, thus items go stale or are not in a good state when found. It's easier to keep them (food items) in a pack or carry all that you take with you to all events. If you go to public parks or camping it is advised not to keep food items in your car. It really depends on where you go and your immediate needs etc.
