The Greater Dog Network

edited July 2009 in General
I just got off the phone with Heidi Isaacson of The Greater Dog Network and I am so stoked! It's basically a network for all things working dog, with the emphasis on service, military, and search and rescue dogs. I contacted them because I was interested in donating some of Skella's puppies to be assistance dogs and actually finding it difficult to find people who want them. This network is basically connecting the people who need something with the people who are willing to offer it, for the betterment of the dogs and the people who need them. I'm really impressed with their philosophy. They're eager to involve anyone willing to be involved and they're eager to involve every breed, not just the top five.

The Network is in its infancy, so it's still being worked on, and if anyone wants to check it out and give them feedback, I know they'd appreciate that.

Also, anyone else breeding or otherwise involved in working dogs, I encourage you to get involved! It's being started in Canada, but the goal is to make it worldwide.

Anyway, I'm just so excited. I'm going to be involved with Iceland sheepdogs and Shikoku. I'm further from breeding shikoku, but I would like to volunteer with SAR and donate puppies for SAR work.

How awesome Heidi! Thats really good news :)

BTW. "Heidi...Isaacson..." wow. Talk about a coincidence in names. Heidi has a son named isaac. This lady's name is Heidi Isaacson. I thought at first her name was typo :x ~

    That is...to many coincidences! lol

BTW out of curiosity, when do you plan to start breeding Skella? [ &...I'm confused...wasn't she renamed...Navi? lol ] Are you going to breed her to someone else's sire or going to get your own?

You must be excited :) ~

Skella's old enough, I just have to arrange her health checks (hips, mainly, and probably do CERF again), find a suitable stud, and I wanted to find someone who needed a donated service puppy before I bred her, too. There are a few studs I like. The one I really liked has a waiting list until 2011 or 2012, I can't remember, so that'll have to wait 'til later.

Yeah, we tried to rename herr Navi, but it didn't stick, so she's still Skella.

Oh yeah, I wanted to add - one thing that's been hard is finding people who will accept donation puppies. One reason why I'm so impressed with these people is that they aren't guarded and elitist, it really is just about helping people help each other. For instance, one place I emailed to donate a puppy to had a list of criteria on their website, and Iceland sheepdogs matched it perfectly, but they didn't want Iceland sheepdogs because "spitz dogs are too intimidating." I was really annoyed, but I had to laugh at the idea of anyone being intimidated by Skella the Ultra-Pansy.

Here she is intimidating my Nana:
