I believe these are beef tendons, dried and sometimes twisted? My dogs enjoy them too although mine are not shibas :)

I think they are fine if chewed and ripped up, not swallowed, and I am not aware of any preservatives or icky things about them, but someone else may know more?

    From http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/treats_detail.php?c=21&s=15051

    Flossies 6-8" (with header)
We really don’t have to say much about this treat at all because it sells itself. As the top selling treat at Merrick, the Flossie™ is made from a beef tendon. The unique design of this treat creates a natural chewing friction against the teeth which helps to clean a dog's teeth. We have not met a dog yet who has turned down one of these tasty treats.

    Ingredients:
    Beef Tendon

    Guaranteed Analysis
    Crude Protein (Min.) 89.73%
    Crude Fat (Min.) 1.00%
    Crude Fiber (Max.) 0.82%
    Moisture (Max.) 8.45%

Looks okay to me! Says they are made in the USA and are USDA sourced treats.

I think my dogs might like these...do they smell at all?

Right Chrys, that is why I asked, I won't give pizzles to my dogs because of the smell but these flossie things...well I might just give it a go.

Koda like his. They do not smell like the bully sticks do, but I think the bullies will probably save some of my personal belongings during the teething stage. Koda loves them!

I just ordered two flossies for my kids, hopefully they don't smell too bad or they are going right in the trash with the pizzles :P
  • edited November -1
Kristen I can't believe a little smell is making you deny the kids such a wonderful treat that everyone would enjoy. ha ha ha

I don't think they smell as bad, but I've gotten used to the pizzle a little. I just try not to walk by when he's got it all wet.

Bingo is too cute!! I do love shiba pics.

Im horrible with smells, everything makes me gag and or vomit. I can't even imagine the smell wet pizzle, raw green tripe, or any of the other disgusting (but wonderful for dogs) things I've heard on the forum. I still turn my head and hold my breath when I give them their fish oil...

My dogs get lots of treats and things that they enjoy, just without the smells!

ha ha ha. You should go to Italy where they sell Tripe on the streets to eat. Bleached ofcourse, but it still kind've grosses out my half American self.

    We'll take your pizzles Kristin!

Kristin - try using the fish oil capsules - no smell!

They make a greatly reduced odor bully stick by Moo! dog chews, (http://www.freerangedogchews.com/catalog/section.asp?sec=1#cat_1)

About 95% less smell than Redbarn or generic brands which are the worst, especially when wet. I held my nose up the Moo! chew right after the puppy got done working on it and then I could smell the penis-y smell, but even then it wasn't really bad.

The tendon chews look really neat, will have to try them for the dogs.

Moo lite pizzle sticks. "Same great pizzle taste, lest awful pizzle smell." I don't think I'm ever going to let get a bull pizzle for Katsu to chew on. I might try the flossies though.

She can't actually eat them right, it's only for chewing?

LOL Jen, Maybe I will send you a pizzle package!

I do use fish oil capsules, I can still smell them! EW

You guys are wimps! Bully sticks don't smell unless you are right on top of them, and the dog really, really enjoys it.
  • edited November -1
Kristin, maybe you can see if a local shelter will except the pizzles for their dogs to enjoy?

Locked up and eating pizzle. It sounds like those dogs would fit right into an episode of Oz.

    HA!

    Katsu would love bully sticks.
