    family dog:
    Augusta aka Gus (GSD mix) - female (RIP)
    [tangent: We had this dog from 1 year before I was born until I was 13 years old, and I only ever knew her as Gus. Needless to say my *father* nicknamed our poor girl and doomed her to a life of ambiguity when it came to people knowing her gender. I only recently discovered that her full name was actually Augusta. For some reason it was rather upsetting news; I felt like I hadn't known the "real" Gus. Well, Augusta that is :) ]

    personal dog(s):
    Shira (Shiba) - female

    we like females better (don't ask, we're just silly) so our next one will probably be another female if we have it our way.

    Jen - Well they say dogs do better in male/female pairs and I was curious to how many people in the forum actually stuck to that.

    We had so many dogs growing up, I didn't list them, but the males always got along better in groups than the females. None of them were Shiba, they were Schnauzer, Heeler, GSD, bird dog and setters, BC, Golden, Lab, Poodle, Tibetan Terrier types and mutts with generally much more pleasing temperments. The exception to that was the Shar Peis and Pomeranian. They would not get along with any other dogs unless raised with them. The biggest disputes we had were between a GSD and BC girl of similar size after introducing the younger adult female with an established older female and expecting them to run and work together. They were powerful, driven dogs and regardless of excersise, space and treating them equally, they still tried to kill each other. We weren't very good "pack leaders" when I was growing up.
