Shiba Inu - lawn dog
So I got around to asking my wife, a native Japanese speaker who knows a lot of arcane kanji, how she'd translate the kanji for Shiba Inu the other night. I told her American Shiba enthusiasts generally hold to "little dog" or "brushwood dog."
She said they're "lawn dogs." Her explanation was that unless you can afford a lawn in Japan, you don't have space for a dog! lol.
(I didn't press her on what the "old reading" of the kanji for shiba might have meant, because I would have surely gotten another one of those lectures like in the movie "Groundhog Day" where Bill Murray is at the breakfast buffet and the old lady starts talking about the weather.)
