Some videos from the Dog Ranch...

Some really rough play...

*Kona has started playing REALLY rough with Masha, we think he likes it... but the jury is still out. We have to watch them very closely when they are free together. Masha is just a brute, she doesn't care at all.

Luytiy decided to check on Kaia...

*Note the lovely wood-scraps Blue left behind on the couch... thanx Blue.

Hilo is such a fun guy...

Luytiy doing his job...

*I love his little pre-gaurding-display dance. LOL

Awesome videos! When they are all (or most of them) out together, do they usually pair up and play in groups or has it ever been a free-for-all dogpile?

Poor Kaia. She didn't seem too fussy, even with the big guy bothering her. She's tolerating the whole situation pretty well, it seems.

Awesome vids Brad. The guarding video is cool, god bless the person who tries to invade your property.

Great videos...Masha plays like Tikaani and I love Hilo's howl

I love how calm they get when Jen gets in there. I always want to just hug Hilo!!

Big L is so sweet to check on his injured family member.

I've said it before, but Blue is going to be such tough dog, a force to be reckoned with. When he leaves his feet and body slams into Masha, just wait until he does that at 120lbs.

Wow, great videos. The rough play looks like fun, but like you said, it would be something to watch carefully because Masha is turning into a Beast! Blue is getting big too for that matter.

Very sweet of Luytiy to check in on Kaia! She looks so sad poor girl :(. Hopefully she is recouperating!

I just freakin' love Hilo! That dog is way to cute for anyones good. He is just a happy fellow and he makes me smile. The bearcow howl too...melts the heart I tell ya!

Luytiy guarding is SCARY! Just running around and them BAM serious barking going on! I don't think I would like to be an un-announced UPS guy on your property! YIKES!

Awesome videos! It is always so cool to watch your dogs play... Especially Masha, she cracks me up!

Great videos. I love Kona! Hilo is so super cute too!

Kona is a tank! Him against a CO and CC! I think Jen gave him a break at a good time - he looks like he is reciprocating Masha's play without frustration or anything. Of course, on a video is much different than seeing it in person!

Big L is such a softie around Kaia. How sweet. And from that to his guarding! Impressive.

Hilo = bear cow. That is seriously the only way I can think to describe his aroooo noise!

Pretty little Loa and her toy <3
How do you guys deal with toys and bones? Any guarding issues or things they especially cannot have around one another?

hahahaha -> "It's hard to pet, I have a beer in my hand"

Hilo's tail is so poofy! I love it.

Thanx all! :o) I thought these videos were fun.

    >> Yes, they tend to play in 2s or 3s. Any more than that and it can get out of control, and then it's not fun. We do, at times, have to reduce the number of dogs playing. It's rare that they all play together. The clicks also seems to change, now Loa and Kona are playing a lot, they had stopped playing for a while.

How do you guys deal with toys and bones? Any guarding issues or things they especially cannot have around one another?
    >> They will argue over new objects/toys, but older toys seem to be less valuable. Toys seems to lose their value as they age. We could never have bones in the yard, they would argue over them all day. They get bones in their crates.

Luytiy is fast becoming my favourite of the Anderson Pack, which is weird being as how I'm an Akita girl myself. He's so impressive! I'd steal him but I have no intention of becoming someones lunch ;)

Whats the status with Hilos ears now? I remember a thread from I have no idea how long ago wondering if they'd stand up? I must say despite the fact it's obviously a shame if they don't it does add a certain character to him, not that he needs anymore from seeing his videos! :D

    Hilo my love!!!

Bet he remembers when HE used to be the biggest dog! Now he sees little Masha & Blue catching up & surpassing him! Aww.~

    Oh & I think Kona is a total Masochist ;p ~
  • edited November -1
Claire - Hilo's ears will never go up, he has some health issues that caused them to stay dropped like that. He is almost 3 now, so there is no hope for them.
  • edited November -1
But they're super duper cute that way. :)

I agree with Mylo, it just adds to that "Hilo-ish Character" he has going on. Cutest 'kita I ever saw.

    Precious!

Luytiy doesn't seem to interact with them much at all... seems more concerned and focused on keeping a good lookout with minamal playtime. Sound about right?

It looks like a lot of fun at your ranch. I'd imagine if it wasn't for the dogs...life would be pretty boring and uneventful...or in the very least...quiet. I'm super happy you and Jen are enjoying your pack.

    Please...continue with the vids!

LOL - the dead horny lizard (close up was great, thanks for that). Quite the guardian Masha is :)
Loa is crazy, giving the snirk (snarky smirk?) for a piece of the dead thing. Love it!

Does Blue fit right in with Masha/Luytiy? Does he follow their lead or guard in his own way?
Him and Ahi playing is adorable!

Haha, yea, Loa and Ahi kill (at least) 5 Horney Lizards a day - usually on our walks. If the catch them in the yard we have to take them from them or they will all argue over them all day... here's the thing tho - they don't eat them! They just kill them! It's kinda sad. :o(

It's nice to see Ahi and Blue playing, it's taken this long for Ahi to even consider playing with Blue - which surprises us since Blue is so similar to Ahi as a pup.

As for Blue gaurding, he guards on his own terms. He guards us from his reflection in the windows every night, and from the horses on the trails behind our home (like Ahi).

Yesterday on our walk he charged a car that drove by - I think he heard our dogs barking from behind the fence (he is still rather dog reactive), then saw a car zip by on the road (like 500+ feet away) and just took off after it (leash got away from Jen)... he got about 1/25 the way there (a bit past the house) and just stopped. It was like he stopped and said "What am I doing?". LOL

Maybe dogs dont eat reptiles? Reilly is a good Irish dog and kills every snake she sees, but she doesnt eat them, either. We dont have poisonous snakes in Mass, only small nonpoisonous ones. but in NM, you must have lots of poisonoous creatures to watch out for? How do you manage to keep away snakes, scorpions, gila monsters...the spiders alone would have me crazy with anxiety! It's not the large, shootable dangers that would worry me as much as the "Crap, I didn't even SEE it"s....how do you do it?
  • edited November -1
We are in northern NM, high up on a mesa (aka "high desert"). Our house sits at 7600 feet and the hottest it gets here on average is 85 degrees (tho this year it hit 97!) and only for a month in the summer (last month). The nights here are 55 at the hottest.

Because of these temps, altitude, and snow amounts we have very little dangerous (poisonous) insects and reptiles. No scorpions, or gila monsters, just the occasional Horny Lizard, Tarantula (totally harmless), and Skink. We have a good number of bull snakes (constrictors), but we have only seen 2 in the time we have lived here - they want to go where they can catch food (mice), and very few mice/rabbits/prairie dogs survive a yard filled with Nihonken.

I do worry about the Bull Snakes, as they can constrict on one of the dogs if threatened... but that's pretty unlikely. The 2 I have seen have been bothered by Kona and I have shooed it off the property - the snake seemed lass than concerned about Kona or me - just wanted to move on.

Towards the gorge (2 miles from here), you can find rattle snakes in the lowers parts, and there is a potential for rattle snakes being here on our property but that would be an extremely rare situation. But, if you drive into Taos Canyon (where the altitude drops to 6k feet and it is much hotter - about 30 min drive from here) you will mos def see the poisonous creatures you mentioned.

So, yea, I worry about it... but what can I really do other than keep the yard clean and check the dogs regularly for bites. I mean, we have a lot of acreage here, it's pretty impossible to keep it clear of (other, uninvited) animals.

this is one reason why I was drawn to CAO when first looking at LGD, they have an innate hatred for snakes due to their origin and are very efficient at killing them... but that didn't work out.
