I was under the impression that a dog with fur sheds regularly and doesn't require trimming. These include shibas, huskies, beagles, labs, weimaraners, bulldogs, great danes... that sort of dog. A dog with hair that grows like a human needs to be cut, on dogs such as poodles, many terriers (scottish, west highland, yorkshire), bichons...
I think it's extra important that dogs with an undercoat aren't shaved, as it can really leave their skin unprotected against the elements for many months.
My mom was picking er shih tzu up from the groomers and to her surprise she saw a newly buzzed husky. Poor thing did not look happy at all.
The coat on such dogs as huskies and shibas are specially equipped to heat the dog in winter and cool the dog in summer. After shedding is over with, there is all this space between the guard hairs that lets body heat escape, and keeps the heat from the sun away from the body and the skin. The coat also serves as a UV protector keeping the skin from getting sunburned
hahaha No problem. I know you were trying to help him out in the heat. He'll be much more comfortable if you just give him a good brushing every once in a while =0). Also, he might like to chomp on an ice cube. Just make sure you run it under the tap for a few seconds before you give it to him (so it won't stick to his tongue).
