Maremmas (Italian LGD's) - A report of working dogs from Wisconsin Public Television

edited July 2009 in General
The wife and I watch a show called In Wisconsin on Wisconsin Public Television almost every week. This week they showed a report on some farmers who live in Bayfield, WI which is very far north and where we have the majority of our wolves roaming. The farmers in this video are a great family who understand that they decided to move into territory owned by wildlife and respect that. To protect their sheep they do not use rifles, they use Maremmas an Italian LGD.

In Wisconsin puts their reports on TV and I thought many of you would enjoy watching it. The Maremmas are amazing at what they do, dogs are awesome.

Very cool! Thanx for sharing - this is the type of thing that needs to be made public so others will follow.

I agree that it should be public. Wolves don't need to be shot to be kept away.

These dogs are just amazing at what they do, I love the shot of them leading the heard of sheep.

It would be so hard to own a dog that you couldn't pet and hang out with and train, but as the guy said, if you train it to listen to you, it no longer has the instincts to do its job.

It's amazing what can be done when you just let instincts be. Cool story.

All the LGDs I have known are Maremmas, very cool dogs. I once read an article about them being used to protect penguins in Australia.

I'm not sure about training interfering with instincts. Salt (Maremma I have spent the most time with) knew a basic command or two, and was very friendly to familiar people. Loves her belly rubs and usually hangs out with you if she's not busy. It didn't interfere with her ability to do her "job" at all. She fended off black bears, cougars, and wolves.
